Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi on Monday, 18, 2026, appointed former Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed as the Kenya Revenue Authority’s Commissioner General.
Mohamed takes over from Humpfrey Wattanga, who left KRA in April 2026.
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 11 (1) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury appoints Aban Abdulla Mohamed to be the Commissioner General of Kenya Revenue Authority, for a period of the (3) years, with effect from the 18th May, 2006.
is a Kenyan technocrat currently serving in President William Ruto’s administration as Chief of Strategy Execution in the Executive Office of the President.
He previously served as Cabinet Secretary under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, making him one of the few senior officials to hold key roles across two administrations.
Mohamed was first appointed to the Cabinet in 2013 as the Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization and Enterprise Development.
At the time, he joined the government from the private sector, where he had built a career in banking and corporate management.
He is among the few former Cabinet Secretaries from the Kenyatta administration who are currently holding senior roles in President Ruto’s government.
Early Life and Education of Adan Mohamed
Adan Mohamed was born on December 1, 1963, in El Wak, Mandera County, in Kenya’s North Eastern region.

He attended primary school in Mandera, where he stood out academically.
Records show he was one of only two pupils from Mandera Primary School to qualify for high school, highlighting his early academic strength.
For secondary education, he joined Kangaru High School in Embu County.
Mohammed later attended the University of Nairobi (UoN), where he graduated in 1989 with a First-Class Bachelor of Commerce degree.
He began his professional training at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he qualified as a chartered accountant after training in London.
After gaining early work experience, he furthered his education abroad, enrolling at Harvard Business School, where he completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1998.
He also gained early international exposure through professional assignments, which helped shape his approach to business and public administration.
This combination of local academic excellence and global business training laid the foundation for his later career in banking and government.
Career
Adan Mohamed began his professional journey at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he trained as a chartered accountant before gaining international exposure in London.

He later moved into consulting, working with Shell in Nigeria, where he built experience in corporate strategy and operations.
Mohamed joined Barclays Bank Kenya after completing his MBA, rising through the ranks to become Managing Director for East and West Africa.
In this role, he oversaw regional operations and established himself as a senior figure in the banking sector.
He transitioned into public service in 2013 after being appointed Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization and Enterprise Development by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In this position, he was responsible for driving manufacturing growth, attracting investment, and overseeing industrial policy.
In 2018, he was reassigned to head the Ministry of East African Community, where he served until 2022, handling regional integration, trade policy, and cooperation within the East African bloc.
In 2022, Mohamed resigned from government to contest the Mandera gubernatorial seat but was unsuccessful, marking a brief exit from public office.
Following the 2022 General Election, Mohamed returned to government as a member of President William Ruto’s Council of Economic Advisors.
In November 2023, he was appointed Chief of Strategy Execution in the Executive Office of the President, where he oversees the implementation of government programs and the coordination of key policy priorities.
The position places him within State House structures responsible for tracking the delivery of government commitments and aligning policy execution across ministries.
His appointment under both the Kenyatta and Ruto administrations places him among a small group of technocrats who have maintained influence across political transitions in Kenya’s government.
