Biography
James Smart is an experienced journalist with over 15-years’ experience in broadcast journalism as a storyteller.
He has worked as a talk show host, news anchor, reporter, and producer in major newsrooms within and without Kenya’s borders.
James interests are in slow journalism, meaning making, and narrative building. He is currently the Managing Editor Newsroom Productions and Partnership.
Family life of James Smart
James Smart is married to Rehema (Remmy) Majala, a journalist who used to host the ‘Alfajiri ‘ show at K24. The couple has a son named Riley Kwamusonzi.
Education
Smart attended Baba Dogo Primary School in Nairobi before proceeding to St Paul’s Lugari Boys High School in Kakamega.
Thereafter, he pursued Communication and Journalism at The Catholic University before proceeding to Cardiff University for master’s in international journalism and Electoral Behavior.
James Smart Experience
After school James worked as news reader at Capital FM Kenya before being appointed as a news anchor at Nation Media Group (NMG) in 2010.
Between November 2012 and March 2017, he worked as the Standard Group (SG) as an editor and talk show host.
Similarly, he worked as a scholar at Chevening Scholarships in the United Kingdom from August 2014 to March 2017 before joining BBC as a scholar expert.
Smart was a fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy, United States (U.S) from February to August 2017.
In addition, he served as media specialist and consultant at PCPG from May 2017 to March 2024. Afterwards, he returned to NMG as managing editor newsroom productions in September 2020.
He held the position until August 2024 when he was promoted to be the managing editor newsroom productions and partnerships.
