Kathuri Murungi is the current Senator for Meru County and serves as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Kenya, a position he assumed unopposed on September 8, 2022.

He was elected as Senator in August 2022 on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

Before becoming a senator, Murungi represented South Imenti Constituency in the National Assembly from 2013 to 2022, first elected on the National Alliance (TNA) party ticket and later as an independent candidate.

Kathuri was born on August 3rd, 1972.

Educational Background of Kathuri Murungi

Kathuri Murungi completed his primary education at Machikine Primary School, where he sat for his KCPE in 1987, before advancing to Ndagene High School, where he completed his secondary education (KCSE) in 1992.

He then graduated from Egerton University, Njoro, with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management, completing his degree in 1998.

Career Background

Murungi began his professional career in 1999 as a Project Coordinator at Conserve International in Kenya.

He then worked as an Environmental Consultant for Econsults in Botswana (2000–2002), followed by a role as Property Manager at Maiteih Enterprises Limited in Kenya (2002–2003).

In 2003, he became Director at Kenface Enconsults (Africa) Limited, serving in that capacity through 2013.

He entered politics and was elected Member of Parliament for South Imenti Constituency in 2013, representing The National Alliance (TNA) party.

During his tenure (2013–2022), he served on key parliamentary committees, including Environment & Natural Resources, Regional Integration, Trade, Industry & Cooperatives, and the Special Funds Accounts Committee, and chaired the Special Funds Accounts Committee after his re-election in 2017.

In the August 2022 general election, Murungi was elected Senator for Meru County under the UDA ticket.

On 8 September 2022, he was elected Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Kenya, stepping into the role unopposed.

He also serves as Chair of the Liaison Committee and Vice Chair of the Procedure and Rules Committee.
