John Ongosi is a senior Kenyan education official serving as Director of Education at the Ministry of Education, where he has been involved in the implementation of major reforms within the country’s education system.
His work has placed him at the center of discussions on curriculum implementation, education quality, learner transition, and teacher preparedness.
Additionally, he also explained key aspects of the Senior School structure, including the three pathways available to learners: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science.
John Ongosi has played a role in the rollout of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, particularly as Kenya transitions learners into Senior School.
He has represented the Ministry at national education forums addressing learning outcomes, education quality, and the implementation of the new system.
Educational Background of John Ongosi
John Ongosi began his secondary education at Maranda High School, where he studied from 1982 to 1985.
After completing his secondary education, he joined Meru High School for his KACE A-Level studies. He attended the school from 1986 to 1987.
In 1988, Ongosi joined Kenyatta University to pursue a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Education, Physics and Mathematics.
He completed the undergraduate program in 1991 and graduated with Second Class Honors.

Ongosi later returned to Kenyatta University for postgraduate studies in Educational Communication and Technology. He pursued a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from 2005 to 2011.
In 2012, he began pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum, Instruction and Media at Maasai Mara University.
Roles and Responsibilities
John Ongosi began his career in education in May 1991, when he joined the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as a teacher and lecturer specializing in Physics.
He served as a Physics teacher and lecturer from May 1991 to November 1998, gaining experience in classroom teaching and science education.
In August 2015, Ongosi joined the senior management ranks of the Ministry of Education as a Deputy Director of Education.
He served as Deputy Director of Education for several years before rising to the position of Director of Education in September 2023.

As Director of Education, Ongosi has been involved in curriculum implementation, teacher training, learner transition and education-sector policy coordination.
His responsibilities have also included supporting teacher preparedness for changes introduced under the new curriculum.
In March 2025, Ongosi said more than 229,000 teachers had been trained to prepare for the transition to Senior School.
John Ongosi also highlighted the importance of ICT skills among teachers in supporting digital learning, remote lessons, and live-streamed classes as the education system adopts new teaching and learning approaches.
Through his position at the Ministry, Ongosi has therefore been involved in communicating and supporting some of the major changes affecting learners, teachers, and schools under Kenya’s ongoing education reforms.
