What is KRA PIN? It is a personal identification number that identifies you for purposes of transacting business with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), other government agencies, and service providers.
Services that Require a KRA PIN
1. Opening a Bank Account

When opening a bank account in Kenya or any financial institution you will be required to produce your PIN.
In addition, it is a requirement in applying for loans or credit facilities with banks.

2. Employment
Most employers in Kenya require employees to present their KRA PIN before being hired, as it is used in remitting tax on salaries (PAYE).
The employer will also require a NSSF (National Social Security Fund), and SHA (Social Health Authority) registration number that you applied for in the E-Citizen using the PIN.
3. Driving License and Vehicle Registration
When applying for a new driver’s license or renewing an existing one, a KRA PIN is required.
Additionally, it is necessary for registering a vehicle or transfer ownership of a vehicle at the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
4. Immigration Services
It is required when applying for or renewing a Kenyan passport and if you are applying for a work permit in the case of foreigners.
5. Business Registration
KRA PIN is required when registering a business with the Registrar of Companies and in getting a Certificate of Incorporation.
If your business’ taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold, you must register for VAT using your PIN number.

6. Property Transactions
When engaging in real estate transactions, such as buying or selling property, you will be required to provide a PIN number for tax purposes (e.g., stamp duty).
Additionally, a KRA PIN is required in registering land or transferring property ownership at the Lands Office.
7. Accessing Government Contracts
If you are applying for government tenders or contracts, a valid KRA PIN is required as part of the compliance process.

8. Retirement Benefit
A KRA PIN is also a requirement when registering with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for contributions and claims.
In accessing Pension Schemes’ benefits or retirement schemes, a KRA PIN is required to ensure accurate deductions and payments.
9. Government Loans and Financial Aid
In applying for the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans, your PIN will be required to confirm financial eligibility.
10. Foreign Exchange Transactions
For businesses involved in export and import activities, a KRA PIN is mandatory for customs clearance and other related government services.
