Emmanuel Wanyonyi is a Kenyan middle-distance runner who rose from a cattle herder to an Olympic gold medallist, capturing global attention.
He was born on August 1, 2004, in Kapretwa Village, Trans Nzoia County.
Wanyonyi discovered his athletic talent while at Kosirai Secondary School.
He has since become one of the fastest men in the 800m race history, securing gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics and multiple Diamond League titles.
Career life of Emmanuel Wanyonyi
Emmanuel Wanyonyi gained global attention in August 2021 when, at just 17 years old, he won the World U20 Championships 800m title in Nairobi, setting a championship record of 1:43.76.
His career continued to surge when he claimed silver in the men’s 800m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
In 2024, Wanyonyi entered the international record books.
He won gold in the 800m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, clocking an exceptional 1:41.19, the third-fastest time ever in the event.
Earlier that year, he also broke the world road mile record in Riga with a time of 3:54.56, demonstrating his range beyond the track.
His achievements include winning the Diamond League 800m title for three consecutive years (2022–2024) and equalling Wilson Kipketer’s historic 1:41.11 during the Lausanne 2024 meet, tying him for the second-fastest 800m time in history.
On Friday night, July 11, 2025, the Olympic and World Champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivered a sensational performance at the Monaco Diamond League, powering to a world-leading and meeting-record time of 1:41.44 to clinch victory in the men’s 800m event.
At just 20 years old, Wanyonyi now holds the 10th fastest time in history over 800m. This was Wanyonyi’s third consecutive Diamond League victory this season.
As of 2025, Wanyonyi is preparing to defend his title at upcoming international competitions and continue competing in the World Athletics Championships set for September and Diamond League circuits.
Family life
Emmanuel Wanyonyi comes from a large family of 12 children, and his parents are small-scale farmers in Kapretwa Village.

Wanyonyi, in a shared online video, explained that he stopped going to school and went to live on the streets in Kitale.
He spent his life in the streets for six years before going back home, since life became unbearable.
Educational Background
Emmanuel Wanyonyi dropped out of primary school in Standard Three to support his family by working as a cattle herder.
However, at the age of 14, a teacher encouraged him to return to school, where he resumed studies at Kosirai Secondary School in Nandi County.
This is where his athletic potential was quickly noticed, though he had no formal athletic training before.
Wanyonyi, in 2018, qualified for the nationals in the primary school games and received a scholarship.

He sat his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and later joined form one in 2020, where he met coach Claudio and Janeth Jepkosgei and coach Lelei, who saw his talent and supported him.
