George Mungai Mbugua is a Kenyan politician and a Nominated Senator under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Early life and education
George Mungai Mbugua’s educational journey began in 1979 when he enrolled at Joyiow Primary School, where he studied until 1983 and successfully completed the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) examinations.
In 1984, he joined Kiambu High School for his secondary education, where he undertook his O-Level studies and sat for his exams in 1987.
After completing his O-Levels, Mbugua proceeded to Thika High School in 1988, where he pursued A-Level studies and graduated in 1989.
With a strong academic foundation, he was admitted to the University of Nairobi in 1990, undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree program.
He graduated in 1993, equipping himself with the knowledge and skills that would later shape his professional and political career.

After graduating from the University of Nairobi in 1993 with a Bachelor of Commerce, George Mungai Mbugua joined Jubilee Insurance Company Limited in 1994 as an Underwriting Assistant.
Over two years, he worked on policy preparation, risk assessment, and claims processing, gaining experience in Kenya’s insurance sector.
In 1997, he moved to the Insurance Company of East Africa (ICEA) as a Senior Underwriter. He supervised junior staff, reviewed high-value policies, and ensured compliance with industry regulations. Mbugua remained at ICEA until 2000, building expertise in corporate and strategic underwriting.
From 2001, he transitioned into private business, managing his own ventures.
Through these ventures, he developed a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship, economic trends, and the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises in Kenya.
Political Career
George Mungai Mbugua entered politics through the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a key party in the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Following the August 2022 General Election, he was nominated to the Senate to represent special interests, marking his first term in Parliament.

In the Senate, Mbugua was appointed to the Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialisation and Tourism and the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee.

In 2023, he sponsored the County Governments (Amendment) Bill (Senate Bills No. 39 of 2024), aimed at improving governance structures and service delivery in counties.
He also raised questions on staffing for special needs schools, notably seeking a statement on the transfer of the only special needs teacher at Ngano Special School in Nyandarua County, highlighting his advocacy for vulnerable groups.
Mbugua has pushed for accountability in the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) and other social programs.
