Biography
Isaac Maigua Mwaura is the current government spokesperson serving under the position since October 2023.
The neighborhood subjected Mwaura to prejudice and discrimination because he was an albino.
Early life and Educational Background
Born in Githunguri, Kiambu County, in 1982, Mwaura began his educational journey at Thika Primary School becoming the best KCPE candidate upon completion.
He then proceeded to Thika High School for the Blind despite securing a spot at Starehe Boys High School.
Mwaura excelled in school serving as the head boy at the institution. He went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in special education, French studies and Japanese from Kenyatta University.
Additionally, he obtained a master’s in arts in Development Studies from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa and a master’s in arts in Social and Public Policy Studies from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
Political Career Life of Isaac Mwaura
Isaac Mwaura’s political career began in 2010 when he was appointed as a senior advisor to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on public policy for special interest groups.
He retained the position until 2013 when Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement nominated him as a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly.
The move crowned Mwaura the first Kenyan MP with albinism.
In 2015 the politician switched sides from the CORD Coalition in favour of former President Uhuru’s Jubilee Coalition.
Jubilee welcomed Mwaura nominating him to the senate to represent Persons with disabilities.
While in the senate, Mwaura was able to organize the first albino pageant in the world which took place in 2018.
Additionally, he championed the increase in budget allocation for people with disabilities bringing together other albinos to form the Albinism Society of Kenya, to create awareness of the issues they face.
He also fought for the inclusion of people living with disabilities in the National Youth Service.
In April 2022, President William Ruto appointed Mwaura to his national campaign team.
He took up the role of team leader in Kiambu County and the team’s liaison with people living with disabilities.
Ruto later appointed Mwaura as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) at the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, however, the composition of the positions of CAS in the country was contested.
On October 4, the head of state appointed Mwaura as the official government spokesman. Mwaura is deputized by Gabriel Muthuma and former K24 and KTN news anchor, Mwanaisha Chidzuga.
Mwaura has authored two books; Human rights disability and development in Kenya; A discourse and Youth employment in Kenya; inclusion of persons with disability in employment.
Achievements
Mwaura was selected to the National Council for Persons with Disabilities as a board director while still a university student at the age of 22, making him Kenya’s youngest board member.
He later met his first political mentor Anyang’ Nyong’o and featured in a film dubbed ‘Genes’ with Actress Lupita Nyong’o in 2006.
Mwaura played the character of an aspiring member of parliament in the film.
At the same time, the politician is also among the founders of the Albinism Society of Kenya, where he serves as the National Coordinator.
Some of his notable achievements at the society include petitioning parliament to give Ksh100 million for the supply of sunscreen and other services to people with albinism (PWAs).
Moreover, Mwaura wrote a concept paper that was adopted by the government to set up the national albinism sunscreen and support program under the NCPWD.
