Jaldesa Guyo Waqo is a Kenyan politician and the Member of Parliament representing Moyale.
Educational Background
Jaldesa Guyo Waqo was born on November 19, 1962, and raised in Sololo, Marsabit County.
He began his early education at Sololo Primary School and completed his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1977.
He then joined Garbatula School, where he earned both his Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) and Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) between 1978 and 1983.
Jaldesa then enrolled at the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 1985, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1990.
He later pursued a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UoN from 1993 to 1997.
In 2003, he earned a Master of Science in Reproductive Health from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Career
Guyo Waqo began his professional career as an intern at the Ministry of Health from 1990 to 1992, when he transitioned to become a Medical Officer in 1994 at the same institution.
Guyo’s hard work was recognized, and he was appointed to be a Senior Medical Officer at the Ministry of Health in 1994, a position he held till 1998.
In 1998, Jaldesa transitioned to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Kenya’s largest referral hospital, where he served as a Senior Medical Specialist till 2009.
Guyo Waqo then joined the University of Nairobi in 2009 as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for four years and was promoted in 2013 to an Associate Professor at the University of Nairobi.
After leaving UoN in 2017, Guyo Waqo established a private medical practice, offering specialized services in reproductive health and continuing his advocacy against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
His private sector work allowed him to engage more directly with communities, especially in Northern Kenya, where access to quality healthcare remains a challenge.
Political career
In 2022, Prof. Jaldesa entered politics, winning the Moyale parliamentary seat under the United Progressive Alliance (UPIA).
His transition from medicine to politics was driven by a desire to influence policy and bring development to his home region.
In Parliament, he serves on several key committees, including those focused on public investments, education, and agriculture.
