Kawira Mwangaza is a Kenyan politician who was elected as Meru governor during the 2022 general elections.

Mwangaza won the gubernatorial race after trouncing veteran politicians including Kiraitu Murungi who was the incumbent and Senator Mithika Linturi
She made history, becoming Meru county’s first female governor joining the list of women who won gubernatorial seats popularly known as G7.

They include Susan Kihika of Nakuru, Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay, Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga, Cecily Mbarire of Embu, Fatuma Achani of Kwale, and Wavinya Ndeti – Machakos.
Early Life and Family
Kawira Mwangaza was born in Ontulili village in Buuri constituency in 1973.

She enrolled at Ontulili Primary School but dropped out due to school fees.
In her previous media interviews, Mwangaza revealed that she worked as a house help in Marsabit, after failing to proceed with schooling.
She would later go back to school, joining Moyale Girls Secondary School, where she sat for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams and scored a C+.
Mwangaza, who is also a bishop at Baite Family Fellowship Church later joined Kampala International University in Uganda, where she pursued a degree in Guidance and Counseling.
According to her profile, she also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Transformational Leadership from Pan African University and a Certificate in Human Resources from Makerere University.
She also ventured into business. A born-again staunch Christian, Kawira is married to Robert Murega Rimbera, who is known for his unmatched guitar playing skills and dance moves.
Politics
She unsuccessfully vied for Buuri parliamentary seat in 2013. She later focused on business with the support of her husband, a musician.
Together with Baichu , they established Baite TV to serve the people.
In 2017, Mwangaza vied for Meru Woman Representative seat, which she clinched, ousting Florence Kajuju.
As an MP, she endeared herself to the masses through community projects.
For example, she donated cows, built houses for the poor, bought uniform for needy learners and offered scholarships among other initiatives. These made Mwangaza popular throughout the county.
In 2022, Kawira Mwangaza won the gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate, sending political heavyweights into oblivion.
Impeachment
Since her election, Kawira Mwangaza has fought for her survival, after falling out with Members of the County Assembly – MCAs.
The lawmakers tabled several petitions seeking for her removal from office.
They accused her of gross misconduct and abuse of office among other sins.
In August 2024, MCAs overwhelmingly voted to impeach Mwangaza, a decision that the Senate upheld on August 21.
Mwangaza took the battle to the corridors of justice, challenging her ouster at the High Court.
The Court granted her temporary reprieve, allowing her to remain governor until the petition is heard and determined.
However, on Friday, March 14, 2025, the High Court sealed her fate after dismissing the petition.
She also suffered a heavy blow after Justice Bahati Mwamuye declined to allow her to remain in office as her legal team moves to the Court of Appeal.
She is the first governor to be kicked out since 2022 elections.
