Njogu wa Njoroge, whose official name is John Njogu Njoroge, is one of Kenya’s most recognizable vernacular media personalities.
Over the years, he built a successful career as a radio and television presenter across leading Kikuyu-language stations before transitioning into public service.
Currently, the media personality is best known for his role as the Chairperson of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB). This position has placed him at the center of Kenya’s media and creative industry regulation.
Beyond broadcasting, Njogu has also ventured into politics and public service, making him one of the few media personalities to transition into national leadership roles successfully.
Early Life and Family
Njogu wa Njoroge was born in Karima Mutiume Village in Njoro, Nakuru County, on March 16, 1974.
As a young boy in class 5, Njogu dreamed of becoming a sports commentator and has even confirmed during interviews that he used to improvise commentary sessions while playing with friends.
After completing school, Njogu spent several years searching for opportunities in broadcasting while working various casual jobs to support himself.
Among the jobs he undertook was construction work, earning daily wages as low as KSh 300 as he continued pursuing his dream of joining the media industry.
In addition, Njogu Wa Njoroge ventured into the fashion retail industry, where he sold clothes in Kawangware.
During his business venture, Njogu was acquainted with Muigai Wa Njoroge.
In his personal relationship, Njogu is said to have married his first wife, whom he parted ways with, keeping the details of the separation from the public.
He later married a gospel singer, Mary Lincon in a traditional marriage in 2022, with both having children from their previous marriages.
Njogu has, however, kept his family life private despite speculation on the couple’s separation and Njogu having a third wife.
Among his children, Maurine Njogu from his first marriage is the one known to the public.

Education Background
Njogu attended local schools in Njoro before seeking media-related training at Daystar University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication.
For several years, he reportedly made repeated attempts to gain admission to journalism and media training institutions but was unsuccessful.
“Never give up on your dream. I knocked on many doors for years before one finally opened,” Njogu advised during an interview.
Professional Career and Achievements
Njogu’s breakthrough came when he secured a position at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in 2003, despite having started his media career in 2001.
He began his broadcasting career as a sports commentator before gradually transitioning into radio presentation and current affairs programming, including the Arahuka show.
During his time at KBC, he evolved into a popular morning show presenter and became a familiar voice to listeners across the country.
After leaving KBC, Njogu worked for several leading vernacular media stations, including Inooro FM, Gukena FM, Kameme FM, and Kameme TV.
His career peaked at Kameme, where he became one of the most recognizable Kikuyu media personalities in Kenya.
On radio, he hosted the popular evening program Thingira, while on television he fronted the morning show Rikiratha.
In 2011, Njogu Wa Njoroge received national recognition when he was voted Kenya’s top vernacular radio presenter in a public opinion survey.
Njogu is closely associated with the former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who he has stated helped him in his work at Kameme FM.
Njogu Wa Njoroge’s Political Journey
During the 2022 General Election, Njogu vied for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nomination for the Njoro Constituency parliamentary seat.
Although he did not secure the party nomination, the experience marked an important chapter in his public life and demonstrated his interest in serving beyond the media space.
Since then, he has remained active in political discussions and has continued to express interest in leadership opportunities within Nakuru County and at the national level.

Current Role at KFCB
In February 2023, Njogu was appointed Chairperson of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB).
The appointment marked his transition from broadcasting to public service and positioned him as one of the key figures overseeing Kenya’s film, broadcasting, and digital content industries.
As chairperson, he plays a leadership role in guiding the board’s strategic direction, supporting efforts to regulate content, and promoting the growth of the creative sector.
