From his father’s humble used-car shop on Koinange Street to steering one of Kenya’s most diversified conglomerates, Adil Popat has quietly built an empire.
Born and raised in Kenya, Adil Popat is a businessman whose name has become synonymous with luxury and enterprise.
He is a graduate of the University of Washington, holding a degree in Business (1980) and an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of Business (1984).
Adil Popat First Steps in Business
Adil’s career began abroad, working with Deloitte Haskins & Sells in the U.S. and later in Portugal’s hospitality industry.
His first business attempt in the restaurant sector, a Johannesburg-based Ocean Basket franchise, ended in loss—but that setback became a stepping stone.
Returning to Kenya, he joined his father’s company, Simba Corporation, where he rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2007.
Joining Simba Corporation
Simba Corporation traces its roots to 1948, when Adil’s father, Abdul Karim Popat, founded Deluxe Motors Ltd., a used car business located along Nairobi’s Koinange Street.
The company’s breakthrough came two decades later when it acquired the Mitsubishi franchise, transforming it into a leading automotive distributor.
Over the years, Simba Corp expanded its portfolio, acquiring Fuso trucks and buses in 2001, and venturing into finance, real estate, and hospitality. The group also established Imperial Bank to facilitate asset financing for vehicle buyers.
Under Adil’s leadership, Simba Corporation evolved into one of Kenya’s most successful indigenous commercial organizations, now structured into four divisions: Motor, Hospitality, Finance, and Trade.
Among its crown jewels is the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel in Nairobi’s Westlands, a five-star property that exudes luxury and sophistication.
Owned by Adil Popat, the hotel, part of the prestigious Kempinski Hotels S.A. group, has hosted global dignitaries, including former U.S. President Barack Obama and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
