Celebrated Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo has been making headlines again, but it’s not for his reporting skills this time. Madowo recently shared on his social media accounts that he found a Bible and a packet of condoms in his hotel room during a working trip to Botswana.
Madowo, the current CNN Africa correspondent, captioned the photo of the unexpected welcome gifts with the remark, “My hotel is doing too much.” While hotels typically provide various amenities for their guests such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, towels, slippers, and even beverages or alcoholic drinks, guests rarely receive condoms in their rooms.
The hotel’s gesture may promote safe sex, especially since Botswana, Eswatini, and Lesotho have the highest prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS. Including a Bible in the room may also be seen as a nod to spiritual nourishment.

Madowo’s social media posts about condoms and the Bible have sparked conversations online, with some applauding the hotel for promoting safe sex and others questioning the appropriateness of including a Bible in the room. Regardless, Madowo’s post has again put him in the spotlight, showcasing his ability to draw attention in and out of the newsroom.
In addition to his reporting skills, Madowo has gained attention for his personal life. He has been dating fellow journalist Edith Kimani since 2015, and the couple occasionally shares intimate photos on social media.
Madowo’s unexpected hotel welcome gifts have certainly stirred up a conversation online, highlighting the important issue of safe sex in countries with high rates of HIV/AIDS. While some may question the appropriateness of including a Bible in the room, it’s clear that Madowo’s post has once again brought attention to his work as a journalist and his ability to capture the public’s attention both on and off the screen.
