The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) on December 1, 2023, issued a public safety advisory to remind Kenyans safety measures while using electricity.
In its statement, the Kenya Power and lighting Company listed 8 measures to observe to avoid electricity-related accidents.
“Kenya Power would like to remind customers and members of the public to always practice safe use of electricity,” read the statement in part.
On the issue of consulting electricians, the company warned Kenyans against seeking services from unprofessional electricians.
“Always engage a licensed electrician for all electrical wiring jobs and avoid quacks,” the company advised.
Notably, according to KPLC, quacks expose customers to dangers of electrocution and fires that destroy property and cause injuries to both human and animals.
Also, the Power Company reminded public to ensure that they use legal power connection.

“Illegally connected power, poses a danger to customers as it is done unprofessionally using substandard materials, hence can cause electrocution, fires and injuries,” read part of the statement.
Furthermore, illegal connections overload transformers/network, causing breakages and power outages.
Additionally, the company advised its potential customers to visit nearest Kenya Power office for all power connection needs.
Also, the company noted that those who would attempt the illegal connections risked a jail term, fine or both.
When to Contact Kenya Power
The power supplying company advised members of the public to contact the company if they come across any fallen power lines.
“If you come across fallen power lines, call or text 97771 or dial*977#, or contact the nearest police station/ Kenya Power office,” the company noted.
“Do not touch, drive over or try to remove fallen power lines, electricity pole or conductors as you risk being electrocuted,” the company added.
Also, one may contact KPLC before cutting down any trees that are near electrical lines.
Personal Responsibility
Ensure buildings structures or operations like car wash are not under or near power lines or transformers avoid electricity related accidents.

Also, warn and educate children not to play with electrical appliances and not to play near transformers including flying kites near power lines as they may be at risk of being electrocuted.
Additionally, the Kenya Power reminded people to avoid touching electrical appliances with wet hands as they risk being electrocuted.
Ensure metallic clothing lines or TV aerials do not contact energized power lines to prevent the risk of electrocution.
In case of an accident, Kenya Power reminded the general public to switch off power supply from source.
