A Nairobi-based lawyer who was abducted by unknown individuals in broad daylight on Tuesday, October 29, has been found.
In a video posted by human rights activist Hussein Khalid, CEO of Vocal Africa, the lawyer’s family confirmed that John Eric Wesonga alias Lavani Mila was released by his abductors on Wednesday, October 30, and appeared in the video looking fatigued and dejected.
“I found Lavani. A lot happened to him. But we are glad to see him. So whoever was worried about him should not worry because he is fine. However, he was tortured. For now, let’s give him time to catch up with reality. A lot has happened,” the family member said.
According to Lavani’s younger brother who spoke to the media on Wednesday, October 30, the lawyer was forcefully taken by unknown individuals in Ruaka, Kiambu County, in broad daylight at around 3:30 p.m.
Lavani released by abductors
The family searched for him in all nearby police stations, but he was not found at that time. Lavani has joined the list of critics of the Kenya Kwanza Government who have allegedly been abducted by the state due to their dissenting voices against President Ruto’s administration.
Wesonga’s abduction comes days after Activist Boniface Mwangi was on Sunday arrested at his Machakos home and later released on Monday, October 28, from Kamkunji Police Station.

The country has recently seen a surge in abductions, with some victims being released by their captors while others remain missing.
Recently, activists Bob Njagi and the Lonton brothers, Jamil and Aslam, were abducted.
They were later released after spending a month in captivity, following a public outcry demanding their return.
Maverick Aoko still missing
The latest victim of alleged abduction is social media personality Scophine Aoko popularly known as Maverick Aoko who is a fierce critic of President Ruto’s administration has gone missing for 8 days with activists and Kenyans asking about her whereabouts after her total silence on social media.
Embakasi East Legislator Babu Owino confirmed that Aoko is still missing after reaching out to her family and friends.
“Aoko has been missing for several days, and her whereabouts remain unknown. I have contacted her family members and close friends, but no one knows where she is!” Babu Owino stated.

A section of Kenyans on social media have also expressed concerns about the lack of response from the judicial system regarding her disappearance.
In a tweet, Francis Gaitho criticized the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) for ignoring the alarms raised about Aoko’s situation.
“Aoko has been missing for 4 days now and LSK have not done anything to try and trace her. I hate how civil society and mainstream media are selective and openly biased in how they dispense their duties,” Gaitho criticized.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in a press briefing on Wednesday, October 30, also demanded the whereabouts of Aoko whom he alleges that she was allegedly abducted by a government agency.
