Azimio coalition has demanded an increase in the amount promised to flood victims being relocated by government in different areas from riparian lands.
In a Wednesday, May 8 press statement, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka indicated that the Ksh10,000 promised by President William Ruto to the victims was not enough to help the victims start afresh.
Instead, he demanded for an allocation of Ksh100,000 for every family as well as an immediate launch of an aid appeal for all the flood victims in Kenya
“We note that President Ruto recently announced in Mathare that households affected by the floods will each receive Ksh10,000 with Ksh1 billion set aside. This is a case of too little too late.
“For the families who have lost everything, such allocations are too little to start afresh. We demand that the government allocates at least Ksh100,000 to every family and immediately launch an emergency appeal. Red Cross projects that the flood situation could need at least Ksh7 billion,” said Kalonzo.

Azimio Asks Government to Exercise Care During Relocation
At the same time, the opposition leaders asked the government to exercise care and caution during the forceful evictions, which they noted had already led to several deaths.
For instance, Musyoka indicated that a young boy had died in Mathare slums during the evictions on Tuesday, May 7, as a result of recklessness from the government bulldozers.
On the other hand, two other lives were lost in a similar manner in Mukuru slums according to the Wiper leader.
“We note that the regime is forcefully evicting people from the areas perceived to be flood-prone and riparian land. Any such evacuations, whether mandatory or voluntary must be done in a humane manner that respects human rights without causing further deaths.
“The recklessness and reactionary strategy of the Kenya Kwanza regime has caused the death of a young boy by the name of Ian Otieno. Ian was killed yesterday when the government bulldozers forcefully evicted those living in Mathare,” explained Azimio.

Demands Over General Ogolla’s Death
On the other hand, the coalition demanded that the government sets up a Parliamentary Select Committee to continue investigations into the death of the former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Francis Ogolla.
Azimio explained that Kenyans are concerned and suspicious over the tragic death of the four-star general and his colleagues arguing that the ongoing investigations by the Kenya Air Force was limited.
Additionally, Azimio stated that the matter was important especially given the allegations that Ogolla was personally involved in the 2022 presidential elections.
“The ongoing investigations by the Kenya Air Force is a limited internal affair that does not satisfy the requirement of an open, transparent, independent, and credible investigation.
“We too demand that a Parliamentary Select Committee inquiring into the tragedy be set up immediately. Kenyans are concerned and suspicious that the tragic death of the four-star general and his colleagues may be connected to sinister political machinations,” noted Azimio.
