Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino on Friday May 23 recalled how police assaulted his mother. The firebrand lawmaker revisited the disturbing event after being admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Having grown up in the slums of Nyalenda, Babu Owino narrated that he noted with concern how ordinary Kenyans were humiliated in the hands of law enforcement agencies.
According to the legislator, this happened because the poor Kenyans had no clue of what their constitutional rights exposing them to constant harassment.

“Growing up in the slums of Nyalenda, I noticed with deep concern the constant harassment and humiliation of ordinary Kenyans in the brutal hands of law enforcement agencies, most of the time without a clue of what their constitutional rights were, “Babu Owino explained.
From her Chang’aa sales, the police would beat up Babu Owino’s mother and ask her to pay a bribe instead of taking her to court after arresting her.
Recalling this, he said he had witnessed this happening severally times and this supported his statement that the humiliations were because the mother had no clue of her rights.

“My mother got arrested severally and instead of being arraigned in court would be beaten up by police to pay a bribe from her meagre chang’aa sales proceeds, “Babu Owino narrated.

As a result, Babu Owino was inspired over the years to study and appreciate the laws of Kenya and their role in safeguarding justice.
Babu Owino said his achievement is not for self-satisfaction but for sharpening the tools of service and promised to fight for justice.
“The law is now a new battlefield where I will fight even harder for justice, equity, and the rights of the common mwananchi,” Babu Owino said.
Additionally, he advised the government that it needed to brace itself for more lethal arguments in defense of Kenyans.
“Expect legal action aimed at lowering the cost of living, creating jobs, and holding systems accountable, “Babu Owino advised.

Kenyans expressed their excitements and congratulated Babu Owino for the achievement.

Senior counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi opined that the MP could be the hope to save Nairobi County from bad governance.
“Maybe it will take a lawyer to restore the glory days of Nairobi. Welcome to the bar,” he said.
Nairobi Senator, who is also a lawyer also congratulated Babu Owino.
