Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has responded to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni‘s remarks about him made during the launch of Raila Odinga’s Africa Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid.
In a statement, on Tuesday, August 27, the Embakasi East legislator expressed his gratitude to the Ugandan head of state for supporting Raila’s AUC Chairmanship bid.
He also reflected on his own upbringing, emphasizing that as a young leader in Kenya who grew up in poverty, he understands firsthand what it means to lack basic necessities.
“I thank President Museveni for supporting BABA’S bid for AUC Chairmanship. However, as a young leader in Kenya, having grown up in poverty, I know what it means to lack.,” he said.
Additionally, Babu shared his own personal experiences of going hungry and lacking school fees, stating that he can empathize with those facing similar challenges.
Importance of Leaders Providing Solutions
“If you tell me that you’ve slept hungry, I know what it means to lack food because I’ve been through that. If you tell me that you lack school fees, I will feel you because I know what it is to lack school fees,” said the MP.

Furthermore, the MP stressed the importance of leaders providing solutions to the problems confronting youth in Kenya and across Africa.
“Because of the challenges that we face in Kenya and Africa, we as leaders are meant to provide solutions.”
Babu Owino declares his Commitment to Working Towards a Democratic Society
Owino declared his commitment to working towards a democratic society where every child, regardless of their country or economic background, has access to proper healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
“As Babu Owino, I stand for a democratic society where a child in Kenya will receive proper medication, education and will equally get a job.”
Furthermore, Babu emphasized the need for equitable treatment of all children, asserting that a child in Uganda should receive the same level of care and support as a child in Kenya.
He called for alternative visions of leadership that can liberate Africans from oppression and poverty.
“Equally a child in Uganda should receive the same treatment as a child in Kenya. Because of this, we must offer alternative visions of leadership that will save Africans from the shackles of oppression and the jaws of poverty,” he remarked.
Museveni’s Remarks About Babu
The legislator’s statement come in response to Museveni’s remarks where he called out Babu for his close ties to Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine.
The Ugandan Head of state also faulted Babu for his vocal support of the anti-National Resistance Movement who oppose Uganda’s ruling party which Museveni heads.

“There are some individuals in Raila’s group who think I don’t know what they are doing. I am a consumer of intelligence services. There’s a character called Babu. I always see Babu dealing with anti-NRM groups in Uganda,” said the Ugandan head of state.
Museveni also said that despite his intelligence briefings about Babu’s dealings with anti-NRM activists he had never accused Babu, until today.
“I always see intelligence service reports. I have never accused him, but now I am accusing him.” said Museveni.
