Billy Mwangi Family Speaks Hours After His Release From Abduction

The family of Billy Mwangi spoke to the media moments after the social media influencer resurfaced following his abduction on December 21, 2024.

Billy’s father, Gerald Karicha revealed details of how Billy came back home on January 6, 2025, after going missing for more than two weeks.

“He came back home by himself today at 8 AM and found the mother and myself outside the house,” said Gerald.

He added that the family is yet to recover from the traumatic experience.

“We thank God and everyone who has prayed with us. We also thank the people of Embu for their prayers and support. Billy is fine and is able to speak,” added Gerald.

While speaking to the media Manyatta Member of Parliament, Gitonga Mukunji gave details of Billy’s torture ordeal in the hands of his abductors.

“The preliminary report is that the young man is seriously traumatized and he has been whipped and he has also been in a dark room. I want to say that even if we have found Billy, let him be the last person to go through the ordeal,” stated Gitonga.

He also condemned Billy’s abductors for trying to instill fear in people through their actions, noting that such tactics portray breach of the constitution

MP condemns abductions

“The law is very clear on what should happen to anyone who breaks the law and the fact that Billy has not been charged shows that these people wanted to instill fear in us.

I want to promise them that instead of instilling fear in us you have given us more courage. We will not allow lawlessness and disregard for the constitution,” added Gitonga.

Billy was abducted by four hooded men while at a barber shop in Embu town. They roughed him up before bundling him into a double cabin car, that sped off.

While in court, Karicha stated that a white Toyota Fielder had been surveying his home for days, and on the day of the abduction, the vehicle was also seen outside the barber shop where Billy was.

Two young men abducted still missing

Billy Mwangi was released alongside three other young Kenyans abducted in December 2024; Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplagat.

Two more youths abducted around the same time are yet to be found. They include Steve Mbisi and cartoonist Kibet Bull who was abducted together with his brother Rony Kiplagat who has since been found.

The abduction of the six is believed to have been a result of their social media posts criticizing President William Ruto.

At the same time, the abductions have caused widespread uproar online and have been the subject of verbal exchanges among the political class.
