Several people sustained serious injuries after a bus full of passengers veered off the road and plunged into a river in the Waruku area, off Waiyaki Way in Kangemi, Nairobi.
Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, confirmed the news on Tuesday, October 7 evening, stating that at least 30 people have been injured.
“A bus has plunged into a river at Waruku, off Waiyaki Way, leaving over 30 people injured. Rescue operations are ongoing — more than 20 victims have been taken to Riverside Medical Center, while others are still being evacuated. More ambulances are urgently needed,” he said.
At the same time, Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai shared scenes of the accident and called on the Kenya Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance to intervene.
“We have a major accident in Waruku. A 33-seater bus has plunged into the river. We are asking for rescue services,” he stated.
At the time of publication, no fatalities had been reported, and the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established.

In images and videos captured by The Kenya Times, rescuers and bystanders can be seen working frantically to help the injured. Some victims lie on rocks and along the riverbank, while others are being carried to safety.
The bus, tipped onto its side, is partially submerged in the water, with people clambering over it in an effort to evacuate passengers trapped inside.
Injured passengers could be seen being evacuated through the windows, while others could be spotted lying on the ground in pain.
In other images, a large crowd is gathered around the overturned bus. Rescue efforts continue as people pull debris and attempt to reach victims amid the challenging terrain.
Rescue operations are underway with ambulances at the scene.
The bus toppled into the Mashagusha Stream in the Waruku Village area of Kileleshwa, Nairobi. The stream is a tributary of the Kitusuru River.
Dagoretti North Member of Parliament Beatrice Elachi said she was deeply saddened by the unfortunate accident at Waruku, on the road leading to Gatina, involving a Latema Sacco bus.
She stated that the rescue process is still ongoing and urged continued prayers for those injured and rushed to hospital for treatment.
“The hardworking parents left home this morning to seek their families’ daily bread but, sadly, will not get home. My heart goes out to all the affected families during this painful moment,” she said.
“To the families who have lost their loved ones, please accept my sincere condolences and prayers for strength. I sincerely thank the medical team and our local emergency responders for their swift response and tireless efforts in saving lives.”

The news comes as sixteen people died in a road accident on Sunday afternoon near Kikopey, Gilgil, along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
Thirteen were reported dead at the scene, while three others, who were seriously injured, succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
According to Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru, the victims were traveling in a fourteen-passenger vehicle headed to Nakuru when it collided head-on with a truck.
“The matatu was overtaking and then it rammed into the trailer, causing 13 fatalities and leaving three others seriously injured,” he said on Sunday.
Reports indicate that the passengers had hired the matatu from Nairobi to attend a family function.
