The Catholic church through Maurice Muhatia has criticized leaders making tribal and divisive remarks at a time when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing impeachment.
While speaking at a National Prayer Day at Marian Shrine in Subukia, Nakuru on October 5, Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) chairman Reverend Maurice Muhatia urged political leaders to shun divisive politics.
Muhatia warned that disunity will undermine development within the country and will defeat the aspirations that our founding fathers fought for.
The Kisumu Archbishop expressed concern over the growing disunity among leaders, warning that it could undermine national development and defeat the aspirations of the country’s founding fathers.
Muhatia urges leaders to shun divisive politics
“We do not want elected leaders to express division, dividing citizens in our region and thereby undermining development. It defeats the purpose of why we became a nation and why we fought for independence,” the Archbishop urged.
He emphasized the importance of unity, calling on leaders to work together for the common good and the prosperity of the nation.
Muhatia also lamented that certain forms of government have failed to foster national unity.

“We the Catholic bishops are saddened when forms of Government don’t promote unity within the country,” it is a grave concern for us,” the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kisumu said.
At the same time, the KCCB chairman called upon political leaders to focus on serving their mandate to the electorate instead of causing division among them.
“Leaders should understand why the citizens gave them the mantle of leadership — to unite people, not to divide them for selfish interests,” Muhatia reiterated.
Opinions of other religious leaders on Gachagua’s impeachment
Elsewhere, various clergy have also raised their voices on Gachagua’s impeachment motion.
Pentecostal Voices of Kenya (PCV)churches led by Apostle Peter Manyuru called on political leaders to lower political tensions in the country.
The PCV leadership urged Gachagua to show humility and maintain the respect associated with his office.

The clerics expressed dissatisfaction with Gahagua’s utterances, which they said made him a local leader.
“Given the status of the office of the Deputy President, as the second in command in the country, there is no doubt that the impeachment of the holder of the office would lead to political uncertainty, instability, and chaos, regardless of the merit,” Manyuru said.
