Ghana’s president Nana Akufo Addo has assured the family of the late football star Christian Atsu of a befitting send-off, adding that he will personally attend the burial ceremony to pay his last respect to the fallen star.
While speaking to the family delegation of the late footballer at his Jubilee House Office on the 27th of February, the president eulogized Christian as a brilliant young man and termed his death tragic while affirming that death is inevitable.
“Our responsibility is to give you as much support as we can. We can never erase the loss of this very brilliant man. Our responsibility is to give you as much support as we can. I always console myself with the fact that, at the end of the day, no matter the circumstances, the Almighty will call each one of us one by one, and perhaps, that was his [Christian Atsu] destiny that he is called in this tragic way.”

“So, I have asked the chief of staff, who unfortunately is outside Accra today, to make sure that we organize a state-assisted funeral for Christian Atsu, depending on the date that you, the members of the family and GFA will select,” he went on.
He added that the Ghanaians must appreciate the late football star’s contribution to the development of football and the nation.
“The Ghanaian people must express their appreciation for the work that he did for our nation and the contribution he made to the development of the game and to the development of sports in general.”
Atsu went missing in the immediate aftermath of the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake and was feared to be among those trapped under the rubble of Hatayspor‘s headquarters in Antakya following the quake on the sixth of February 2023. Although false reports of his rescue emerged, he was confirmed dead on the 14th of the same month.
