A referral hospital has issued a statement following the death of a patient on its premises. In a statement dated Tuesday, March 25, Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital CEO Dr. Iqbal Khandwalla admitted that a patient committed suicide and expressed regret over the incident.
“It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the unfortunate loss of a patient who had been receiving care at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH). We extend our heartfelt condolences to all affected by this tragic event,” read part of the statement.
At the same time, the institution refuted claims circulating on social media that the patient committed suicide due to inadequate funds for his hospital bills, stating that the patient was admitted to the facility for the treatment of septic arthritis and was progressing well under medical care.
“He was progressing well under medical care and had not yet been discharged from the hospital. As such, the issue of an unpaid hospital bill does not arise,” the statement continued.

Additionally, the facility noted that the patient had a known history of mental illness, previously acknowledged by both the hospital’s medical team and local authorities.
Throughout his admission, the staff, including mental health professionals, provided counseling and psychosocial support as part of his care plan.

According to Coast General Hospital, the patient made a decision that led to the loss of his life despite the team’s effort.
Currently, the matter has been formally reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and is under active investigation.

Moreover, Coast General Hospital has urged the public to respect the dignity of the deceased and to allow space for accurate, respectful discourse around mental health and homelessness—complex issues that require understanding, support, and community-wide collaboration.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of patients in hospitals.
A similar situation occurred at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where a tragic event took place involving a patient named Gilbert Kinyua.

On February 7, 2025, Kinyua, who had been admitted with a rare neurological disorder, was found dead in his ward, with a slit in his neck. To date, the hospital and police are investigating the case.
