Employees working for extraterritorial companies and bodies including the United Nations (UN) and World Bank are the highest paid, earning an average of Ksh339,274 every month.
The latest data by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), has indicated that the organizations under the umbrella recorded the slowest salary rise at 1.6 percent between 2019 and 20203.
According to the report, the annual salary per employee in Kenya between 2019 and 2023 increased by 3.4 per cent to Ksh894,232.8 from Ksh864,750.1 in 2022.
“During the five-year period from June 2018 to June 2023, total wage employment rose by 9.1 per cent. The public sector recorded a higher growth in wage employment of
18.0 per cent compared to an increase of 5.5 per cent in the private sector
“In the year under review, overall annual average earnings increased by 3.4 per cent to Ksh894,232.8 compared to Ksh864,750.1 in 2022,” the report read in part.

Highest Paying Jobs in Kenya
The report detailed that in the private sector, employees in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply sectors were the highest paid, earning up to an average of Ksh193,834 every month.
In addition, the second highest paid jobs were in the Financial and insurance activities sector where employees received an average of Ksh190,151 per month.
The third highest paid persons in the private sector according to the report were professionals engaging in administrative and support service activities, earning an average of Ksh157,456 every month.
On the other hand, the report noted that in the public sector, employees engaging in Accommodation and food service activities were the highest paid, earning an average of Ksh234,698 per month.
Employees in the Transportation and storage were the second highest paid in the public industry, receiving up to Ksh202,680, followed by professionals in the Financial and insurance activities who were earning an average of Ksh176,275.

Least Paying Jobs in Kenyan Companies
On the flip side, the report noted jobs in the private and public industries where employees received little pay, earning less than Ksh50,000 every month.
In the private sector, employees working in Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities earned an average of Ksh27,634 per month while those in the activities of households as employers example house managers, earned Ksh27,798.
Furthermore, employees in real estate activities were the third least paid individuals, earning Ksh29,339 per month, followed by those in Agriculture, forestry and fishing who earn Ksh33,790.
Also, accommodation and food service activities personnel earned an average of Ksh40,028.
In the public sector, those at the bottom of the wage included professionals in Agriculture, forestry and fishing sector, earning the least amount of salary at Ksh42,668 every month, followed by Mining and quarrying who earn Ksh45,350 per month.
The third least paid individuals in the public sector are working under the Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation sector, earning an average of Ksh54,385 every month.
