Learning was disrupted at Kiamwasi Technical Training Institute (TTI) in Kitutu Chache, Kisii, after a contractor closed down the institution over pending bills.
Over 300 students admitted to the institution are unable to access their classes, leaving their academic future in the dark.

The contractor who built the institution’s infrastructure locked out the academic staff over failure by the government to pay for their work.

Onesmus Motallo, a student at the TTI, said he was displeased with the incidents since he had completed the school fee and is entitled to quality education.
“I am shocked because I have paid the full fee and other charges, but I can’t get a quality education. The teachers have been locked out of the staffroom, and that’s where they get the resources to come and teach us,” Motallo said.
Another student, Joshua Bosire, stated that, “We have been locked out because the contractors have not been paid.”
Besides, Samantha Ann said she is not certain the government will help solve the stalemate and allow the students to continue learning like other colleges.

Teacher Confirms Incident
Additionally, a teacher at the institution said they do not have access to the important resources they use to teach the students.
The teacher who spoke under the condition of anonymity said they can conduct classes without the materials, which have been locked up in the offices.
“We cannot access teaching equipment to train the students, which becomes a problem because it is not possible to conduct classes without resources like books and computers,” the teacher said.

Residents’ Message to Ruto & County Govt
Further, the residents called on President William Ruto and the local leaders to stop the contractor from closing down the institution.
“We are requesting our leaders from the region not to keep silent while the institution is being closed. The institution has over 30 TSC teachers and more than 300 students. We are wondering if the President is aware of this,” Simon Abuki, resident of Kiamwasi village, said.
The contractor has maintained that he will not access the building until he is fully paid.
Kiamwasi TTI is a branch of Kisii National Polytechnic was started back in 2018.
