The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has increased the cost of DNA testing by Ksh7,000.
In a service update on January 8, KEMRI said it had increased the cost of DNA testing from Ksh20,000 to Ksh27,000.
The Institute said the changes took effect on January 1, 2025.
KEMRI thanked customers for their support and directed those with inquiries to visit its website for more information.
“We wish to inform our valued customers of a marginal price adjustment for the DNA Testing Service from Ksh20, 000 to Ksh27, 000 starting this January 2025,” reads the update.
KEMRI Human DNA Identification Laboratory
KEMRI operates a Human DNA Identification Laboratory, also known as HID laboratory.
HID is a leading laboratory in the provision of DNA testing services in the region.
It offers DNA Testing services in the area of paternity testing and family relationship testing.
The facility meets international standards, hence ensuring quality service.
Additionally, it serves private clients as well as those referred to by courts.
KEMRI, being primarily a research institute, is keen on initiating and collaborating in the area of DNA forensics.
The Institute also offers training on DNA testing as a way of contributing towards capacity building both locally and in the region.
It also offers consultancy services to Government laboratories, Universities, and private laboratories that seek to establish Forensic Biology laboratories or expand their capabilities.
DNA Testing
DNA tests can be for legal or personal knowledge depending on what the customer intends to use it for.
A legal DNA test is required as evidence in a court of law, and the sampling procedures must follow a strict chain of custody documentation process to ensure the results are legally defensible.
However, personal knowledge DNA Test has a less stringent process.

DNA Testing Options
1. Paternity Test
DNA paternity test determines whether a tested man is the biological father of a tested child.
2. Maternity Test
This determines whether a tested woman is the biological mother of a tested child.
3. Siblingship Test
This analyses and compares the DNA of two or more potential siblings to see if they share one, two or neither parent.

4. Y Chromosome Test
This identifies direct male lineage. It can be used to determine whether or not the tested individuals share a common paternal lineage.
5.Forensic DNA testing
This can be useful in linking unsolved crimes, finding a suspect, identification of individuals following a mass fatality incident, solve sexual assault cases and identification of missing persons in morgues.
6.Individual DNA Profiling
Private individuals may also choose to obtain records of their DNA profiles in case identification.
