Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir has appointed former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Executive Director Magerer Langat to be a member of the National Oil Corporation of Kenya Board (NOCKB).
In a gazette notice dated, Friday, December 15, Chirchir named Langat alongside Jospeh Ngugi Njenga and Amina Bille as new members of the NOCKB.
Further, their appointments will run for three years with effect from December 15, 2023.
“The appointments of Elizabeth Rogo, Peter Ngugi Kimani and Abdulrizak Ali are revoked,” directed Chirchir.
Langat Political Career
Langat is a former ODM member and represented Kipkelion Constituency between 2007 and 2013.
He was nominated as ODM Executive Director on July 1 succeeding Janet Ongera.
Besides, he served as an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Energy in the Grand Coalition Government.
During this period, he was the coalition deputy chief whip, Member of Constituency Fund Committee and Member of Social Welfare Committee.
Similarly, he served as Deputy Chief Whip for ODM.
ODM Ejects Langat
However, he was forceful hounded from ODM’s National Executive Council meeting in October 2014.
Despite the presence of the Coalition for Reforms and Development (CORD) leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, a rowdy group threw Langat out of the Orange House premises.
According to reports, the group included the coalition’s members of the Nairobi County Assembly and some youths.
After roughing him up, the agitated group deflated the tyres of his vehicle as Raila and Kalonzo watched from a distance.

Further, the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) accused Langat of being a Jubilee mole and working against the party’s interest.
Then Nairobi County majority leader Elias Otieno said Langat was not adding any value to ODM and had become a liability.
“We do not understand why he is here, yet he claims the party is dead. Which party is he serving right now?” Mr Otieno asked.
“We do not want to see him here again. If he wants to remain a member of the party, he is free to do so but as an ordinary member and not as an executive member of this party. That is our decision, and everybody should live with it,” he added.

Nyong’o Response
ODM Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o at the time condemned the attack and said the party would investigate the matter.
“We were surprised by the events that took place and we condemn them. The party will look into it immediately. It has nothing to do with democratic space within the party maybe it has to do with hooliganism,” he said.
ODM Deputy Director of Communication Maseme Machuka was not spared either as the group assaulted him over claims he was working in cahoots with Langat.
