Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has recalled how he had a challenge speaking English during his time primary and secondary school.
Speaking on Wednesday, September 20, during the handover of a Boeing Plane to Mangu Highschool, CS Murkomen said some people, like himself, study proper English when they join secondary school.
“I came from a primary school where English was not taken seriously and so I did not know the difference in pronunciation of letters f, p, v and b,” said the CS.
Further, the CS jokingly said the four letters are pronounced the same way depending on the teacher who was dictating or teaching.
“The teacher would say it is ‘p’ for Benjamin, in the next sentence he would again say ‘p’ for Vincent,” he said amidst laughter from the audience.
Also, Murkomen recalled an incident when he lost his physics book in high school.
The CS said he didn’t know that ‘ph’ in the word physics was being pronounced differently from letter ‘p’.
“It took my friend who went to academy to come and tell me that a ‘ph” in physics is pronounced as letter ‘f’ and not ‘p’.
“So, if you have any problems with pronunciation in public there don’t worry, it was the foundation, “said a laughing Murkomen.
Murkomen: School with most Presidents
Additionally, CS Murkomen congratulated Mang’u for having produced a President and a Vice President in Kenyan history.
“Mang’u alumni are very quiet, and they say quite water run deep, no wonder you have produced a president and a vice president,” he said.
He was referring to the President Late Mwai Kibaki, who served as Head of State between 2002 and 2012 and Vice President between 1978 and 1988.

“But you still need to be very humble because there is a school in this country that has produced two out of the five presidents and that’s Kapsabet High School,” stated Murkomen.
The Late President Daniel Moi who ruled Kenya for 24 years and President William Ruto attended Kapsabet Boys.
Before becoming President Moi served as a Vice President while Ruto also served as a deputy president for ten years.

The CS said the Aircraft Boeing 737-700 is meant to boost Mangu’s aviation curriculum.

“The donation of this aircraft is an act of nobility and an affirmation of Kenya Airways support for the Competency Curriculum which focuses on promoting students interested in particular areas of study, harnessing their innate talents and converting their passion into career,” he said.
The plane has been part of the Kenya Airways fleet and has 56,000 hours of flight.
