DCI Expose How Suspects Rob Foreigners Millions in Runda

The suspects were running their syndicate at The Social house Nairobi Hotel in Lavington.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal investigations (DCI) have arrested four suspects who attacked and robbed a foreign couple Ksh13.5 million.

In a statement on Thursday, November 2, the directorate revealed that the suspects lured an Australin man and his Ugandan wife to Kenya promising to sell them gold.

Further, the statement indicated that the suspects were running their syndicate at The Social house Nairobi Hotel in Lavington, in Kibera and in Runda Glory Valley.

Moreover, the suspects will be charged with robbery with violence, attempted rape, and kidnapping.

“In the case that might see the four and others still on the loose face charges of robbery with violence, attempted rape, and kidnapping.

“An Australian man and his Ugandan wife were lured into the country from Uganda by their to-be attackers, for a gold business deal in Nairobi,” the statement read in part.

DCI Details the Robbery

Explaining the robbery, the sleuths stated that a contact person who claimed to reside in England connected the couple with one of the suspects who said that he was a seller.

Subsequently, after several long conversations on WhatsApp, the couple decided to meet the seller at Village Market in Gigiri on October 28, 2023.

“Once at the agreed venue, Felix sent a driver who picked them up in a Toyota Prado and drove them to the office setting building along Glory Road in Runda,” added the statement.

However, unknown to the foreigners, 10 men awaited them at the said location.

In addition, when they arrived, they were roughed up and beaten up by the men. The woman was subjected to sexual harassment by the men as they beat her up and strangulated her.

“On arrival at their snare, gears shifted fast from the initial VIP treatment to a rough up that subdued them, with the man suffering hefty blows and strangulation that left his wife begging for their lives.

“She was not spared either as the gang handcuffed and slapped her repeatedly as they touched her inappropriately,” the DCI explained.

Couple Survives the Attack

Notably, the robbery suspects made away with Ksh9 million ($60,000) which the couple had carried in cash and jewelries valued at over Ksh4.5 million ($30,000.)

Moreover, the couple were then driven to Rehema house in the Central Business District (CBD) where they were left injured and scared.

“Good Samaritans helped them to a South B hospital where they were treated before reporting to DCI Gigiri.

“Their apprehension came along with the recovery of money counting machines, metallic boxes, forged certificates of mines, customs reflector jackets, military boots, KRA certificates, stamps, a Kenyan flag and fake golden metal bars all confiscated at their Runda office,” the sleuths explained.

Warning on Gold Scam in the Country

At the same time, the directorate warned Kenyans against an increase in gold scams in the country.

According to them, the scams were run by well-organized criminal rings that were yet to be repressed.
