The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has responded to a letter summoning NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua over abduction and extrajudicial killings in the country.
According to the letter dated Wednesday, October 30, Karua issued a statement on Sunday 27th October 2024, in the company of Chief Justice Emeritus Willy Mutunga, Kabando wa Kabando, among others.

In the statement, she indicated that a resurgence of targeted abductions, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings was being done by a highly organized, clandestine group acting outside established security channels.
Also, the letter noted that Karua linked the resurgence of the infamous Ngoroko Squad, a group historically known for conducting covert and unsanctioned operations within Kenya.

“This includes any information, documents, or credible sources that may aid in the comprehensive investigation of this matter.”
However, the directorate has responded boldly, noting that the circulated letter is fake and was not sent to Karua as alleged.

Fake DCI Letter Implicated Gachagua in Abductions
On the other hand, the letter claimed that Karua implicated impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by saying that he was associated with the Ngoroko Squad.
“Credible sources indicate the abduction squads consist of officers from the army and police. These squads are allegedly stationed at Karen near the DP residence and Ole Polos in Kajiado.”
“This modus operandi has led to lengthy illegal detentions, as seen in the cases of Bob Njagi and the Langton brothers Aslam and Jamil, or death, as in the case of the university student leader Denzel Omondi, and the recent abduction and murder of John Njuguna Kuria of Kapenguria.” claimed the letter.
Martha Karua has not yet issued a statement on the matter or responded to DCI on the same.

How to Detect Fake Notices
One of the ways of detecting fake publications and notices is by establishing the source of the information.
Moreover, in an era of widespread misinformation especially with the ease of access to information online, it is important to consider the source of the information one is consuming.
Also, verify if the content comes from an official website or a social media platform associated with a credible entity.
Often, many fake publications contain grammatical errors and other mistakes that genuine officials from government bodies are unlikely to make.
