Death Reported After Perimeter Wall Collapses Amid Heavy Rains

One person has been reported dead and three others injured following the collapse of a perimeter wall in Kiambu County

The incident happened on Monday; April 22 as heavy rains battered the county causing the perimeter wall of a residential apartment to crumble onto an adjacent iron-sheet structure.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi in a statement, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and wished a swift recovery to the injured. 

“Early this morning, I visited a site in Ruaka, in Kiambaa Sub County, where a section of the perimeter wall of a residential apartment collapsed on an adjacent iron-sheet residential structure due to the ongoing heavy rains, resulting in the death of one resident and injuring another,”

“A third person was rescued during the operation by the county government’s disaster management team. We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to the victim recuperating in the hospital,” the governor said.

As such, he ordered immediate action, directing the Department of Lands, Housing, and Physical Planning to oversee the evacuation of residents living in three apartments at the site.

According to Governor Wamatangi, these precautionary measures aim to ensure the safety of residents until the area’s integrity is certified by a multi-agency team comprising county and national government officials.

“As a safety precaution, I have directed the Department of Lands, Housing, and Physical Planning to supervise the immediate evacuation of residents living in three apartments at the site until the integrity of the area is certified by a multi-agency team comprising county and national government officials,” read in part Governor Wamatangi statement.

However, this tragic incident in Ruaka is not an isolated one.

More Devastation Across the Country

Across the country, heavy rains have unleashed havoc, triggering floods and landslides, leaving devastation in their wake.

In Thiba, Kirinyaga County, a 62-year-old woman was swept away by raging floodwaters, becoming another victim of nature’s fury.

Meanwhile, in Homa Bay County, over 1,700 families have been displaced by the floods, their lives upended as they grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.

Adding to the woes, Wang’uru Stadium in another part of the country suffered a blow as its perimeter wall collapsed under the force of floodwaters.

The incident has been attributed to the failure of the National Irrigation Authority to desilt a crucial canal and regulate water flow effectively.

Residents have voiced their concerns, urging authorities to take immediate action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
