Heavy rains wreaked havoc in Nairobi County on Saturday, April 20 night, causing flooding in several parts of the city and resulting in the tragic loss of one life.
Nairobi City County Government in a statement released on Sunday, April 21 confirmed the unfortunate incident and extended its heartfelt condolences to the affected family.
The impact of the rain has been felt across the city, with reports of property damage and the displacement of residents.
According to the statement, search efforts are currently underway for a missing child in Kibra sub-county.
“Following the heavy rains witnessed in Nairobi County last night we have witnessed the impact and subsequent flooding in the city,”
“Regrettably, we confirm the loss of one person and there is an ongoing search for a child in a search is ongoing for a child in Kibra sub-county,” read the County Government of Nairobi statement.
More Relief Efforts Outlined
Further the County government stated that emergency response teams, led by the Disaster Management Department, have been mobilized to provide relief efforts in affected areas.
Moreover, collaboration with national authorities and organizations such as the National Police Service and the Red Cross is underway to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
The heavy rains have caused rivers such as Ngong and Mau Mau to overflow, leading to flooding in various neighborhoods including Mbagathi Roundabout and Westlands sub-county.
Additionally, infrastructure damage has been reported, with a bridge in Nairobi’s Mukuru-Kayaba Slum being swept away.

Roadways, including Raila Odinga Road and Langata Road junction, have been severely affected, disrupting traffic and human movement.
Public Urged to Vacate Flooding Areas
Also, the County government states efforts are underway by the Mobility and Works team in coordination with authorities like the Kenya National Highways Authority and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority to restore accessibility.
The Nairobi County Government has pointed out the need for residents to exercise caution, especially those living near riverbanks, and to adhere to advisories issued by relevant authorities.
Urgent calls have been made for individuals residing in flood-prone areas to vacate, as the county plans to take measures to mitigate future risks.
“We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their property, especially those living near riverbanks. Please heed all warnings and advisories issued by the relevant authorities and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas,” reads the statement.

Consequently, all emergency response teams, including Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, Health, Wellness, and Nutrition; Mobility and Works, and Disaster Management teams, have been deployed to provide necessary support and manage the situation.
