The East African Cartoonists’ Society (KATUNI) on Saturday evening, December 28, condemned the abduction of Kenyan cartoonist Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull, and his brother Ronnie Kibet.

In a press statement dated December 27, 2024, KATUNI through its chairman James Kamawira described the incident as “barbaric, retrogressive, and unlawful,” linking it to a series of abductions targeting young social media users.

“We strongly condemn this barbaric, retrogressive and unlawful act. The two brothers reportedly went missing on Christmas Eve 2024, following a meeting with Busia Senator, Okiya Omtata, in Nairobi,” the statement read.

The Cartoonists’ Society also raised concerns about the whereabouts of other victims including Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, and Bernard Kavuli, whom KATUNI claims are being kidnapped to suppress free speech and intimidate Kenyans.

KATUNI demands release of Kibet Bull and others allegedly abducted

KATUNI criticized the National Police Service’s denial of involvement in these abductions, labeling their statement as weak and non-credible.

The society highlighted that these actions represent a regression to times of severe censorship, unlawful detentions, and violence against government critics, despite Kenya’s progressive constitution over the past 35 years.

KATUNI urged Kenyans to speak out against these violations of constitutional rights.

“We urge all Kenyans to raise their voices against this gross violation of the constitution and call out all who have been involved in these criminal acts,” Kamawira urged.

The society further demanded the immediate release of Gideon and Ronnie Kibet and all others unlawfully detained.

KATUNI also called for accountability from the National Police Service, emphasizing that failure to act swiftly would erode public trust in the justice system.

The society’s statement comes at a time when public pressure is mounting on the government to put an end to the recent wave of abductions.
