Educations CS Speaks Out After Students Died in Road Accident

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba has released a statement after four students from Dr Aggrey Boys’ High School died in a road accident along the Wundanyi-Mwatate Road on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

In a statement, Ogamba said he is saddened by the sorrowful news of the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of six people.

“I am saddened by the sorrowful news of the tragic road accident that occurred on 1st February 2025, along the Wundanyi-Mwatate Road, claiming the lives of six people. The six included four students from Dr. Aggrey Boys’ High School,” Ogamba said.

He extended condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

CS Ogamba Message to Injured Passengers

Ogamba wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery and prayed for strength for the bereaved to cope with their loss.

“We pray that God grants them strength and fortitude during this difficult time. We pray for a quick recovery for those who were injured. May the souls of the departed ones rest in eternal peace,” he said.

How the Accident Happened

The students were returning home after a second fire incident at their school, forcing the administration to close the institution and send them home.

The accident happened in the Josa area on the Wundanyi-Mwatate road when the minibus they were travelling in suffered brake failure and crashed at the dangerous Josa bend.

The other two victims were the minibus driver and a parent who had gone to pick up their child from school.

Thirteen students and an adult were injured and rushed to Mwatate Sub-County Hospital and St. Joseph Mission Hospital in Voi for treatment.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to Moi Hospital mortuary for identification and preservation.

Josa Area Accidents

The Josa area has claimed lives and left several people injured in past accidents.

One student was killed, and 20 others were injured in 2019 when a Taita University bus overturned at the same spot.

In January 2018, another bus carrying mourners rolled at the same location, killing two people and injuring 26 others.
