The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a warning against the circulation of a fake post regarding payment for teachers who supervised and invigilated the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
In a statement on Saturday, February 2, KNEC, through its official X account labeled the post as ‘fake’.
The fake post claimed that delays experienced in payment were due to routine verification processes and not a result of lost records.
Besides, the post claimed that KNEC had dismissed reports alleging data loss as misinformation meant to cause unnecessary panic among affected teachers.
However, KNEC has clarified that the poster and the information contained in it are false.
This came after KNEC flagged another poster claiming it lacked sufficient details about the teachers who invigilated the National Exams.
The fake poster suggested that the absence of these details was the reason why KNEC had not paid the teachers.
KNEC July KCSE Series Suspended
On January 29, the High Court suspended KNEC’s decision to administer the KCSE mid-year series.
KNEC announced that the July exam was targeting repeating candidates who wish to improve their previous grades.
However, Lady Justice Odera Teresa Achieng ruled that the petition filed by Nakuru-based doctor Magare Gikenyi met the threshold to issue conservatory orders.
“The application has met the threshold for granting of conservatory orders at this stage. I proceed to issue conservatory orders…to preserve the subject matter pending interparty hearing,” Achieng ruled.

Education Ministry to Appeal
Speaking after the ruling Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the government will appeal the ruling.
Ogamba said he has instructed the Ministry’s legal team to initiate the appeal process against the High Court order.
He explained that the July KCSE series is essential for Kenyans seeking to improve their grades and secure better opportunities.
“As a government, we are determined to administer these mid-year exams for the benefit of students. At the moment, our lawyers are reviewing the basis of the conservatory order and will respond accordingly,” Ogamba stated.

July KCSE Halted
However, Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang announced plans to halt the July KCSE series.
Kipsang said the decision was in line with the High Court ruling that suspended the exams.
“The suspension is in line with the court’s order, and we are now awaiting further directions from the Attorney General on how to proceed,” Kipsang said.
He stated that candidates initially set to take the July exams might now be given the choice to sit for the regular November-December KCSE exams.
