El Nino Confusion: Weatherman Clarifies as Heavy Rains Intensify

The rainfall season continues; excess rainfall continues this week until the season is over

The Kenya Metrological department has confirmed that the current heavy rain experienced in the country is indeed because of El Nino.

Dr David Gikungu, Director Kenya Met Service has urged Kenyans in flood prone areas to remain cautious.

The weatherman while speaking in an interview on Monday November 6, 2023, confirmed that heavy downpour is set to continue.

Additionally, the weatherman warned Kenyans that the next few weeks are likely to have more flooding as November is usually the peak month of the October to December short rains.

“The rainfall season continues; excess rainfall continues this week until the season is over,” said Dr David.

Likewise, the weatherman confirmed that indeed there will be a reduction of the downpour in some parts of the country which could cause destruction because of the moisture that will be accumulated in the ground.

“There will be breaks where there will be reduction of rainfall in some places. What come with that is destruction because when it is less there is still moisture in the ground,” stated the weatherman.

Hi remark came after confusion stemming from president Wiliam Ruto that El Nino will not occur as predicted.

Floods Displaced Thousands in Mandera

Likewise, the Country has been experiencing heavy downpour causing floods in many parts.

Mandera County is one of the most affected areas with at least five thousand families displaced.

According to Mandera County Kenya Red Cross Society Coordinator Mustafa Adan, at least five thousand households have been affected by floods across the county.

“In four sub-counties, a total of 4,932 households need support out of which 3,113 were affected and 1,812 displaced by floods,” said Adan. 

KeNHA Advisory to Kenyans After Floods Sweeps Road

On the other hand, the heavy rains have damaged several roads in the country rendering them impassable.

KeNHA on Monday November 6 issued an advisory on motorists travelling amidst the heavy rains experienced in the country.

The authority in a statement to newsrooms stated the advisory came following high heavy rains that swept a section of Chemilil Muhoroni highway making the road impassable.

Likewise, KeNHA further gave an alternative route for the motorists plying the routes.

” In the meantime, motorists are advised to use the following detours,” read the statement in part.

“Those travelling from Chemelil to Muhoroni could go through Chemelil- Awasi- Kipsitet- Muhoroni and those from Muhoroni to Chemelil could use the Muhoroni- Kipsitet- Awasi- Chemelil route.” said the Parastatal.
