The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has linked the murder of catholic Priest Father John Maina to cash he received from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Father Maina had presided over the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Igwamiti Catholic Parish in Nyahururu on April 27, 2025, where he also presided over the ordination of Father Simon Thuita.
Further, DCI indicated that the high-profile religious event was graced by several politicians, including the former Deputy President.
However, on May 15, 2025, Father Maina’s life came to a tragic end. A bodaboda rider found him in critical condition near the Diatomite Stage along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

DCI Explains What Killed Father John Maina
The priest, who had visible bruises on the left side of his head, told the rider that he had been abducted from Nyahururu.
The good Samaritan rushed him to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil.
“Upon arrival at the hospital, he displayed visible injuries, including bruises on the left side of his head, which were oozing blood,” stated DCI.
However, despite the medical team’s best efforts, Father Maina succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission.
His body was later transferred to the Nyahururu Sub-County mortuary for preservation and further examination.

Autopsy and Suspicious Circumstances
According to the DCI statement, on May 19, a postmortem was conducted by government pathologist Dr. Ngulungu.
Although bruises were noted on the priest’s head, preliminary findings suggested they were not the direct cause of death.
Consequently, toxicology samples were collected for further analysis, raising suspicions that father Maina may have been poisoned.
Sources within the investigation now revealed that Father Maina may have been targeted over money he allegedly received from Gachagua during the Silver Jubilee event.
Detectives have established that a group of individuals had been trailing him, demanding a share of the money.
“It has been established that Fr. Maina was being trailed by some individuals who were demanding a share of the money allegedly given to him after he presided over the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Ceremony by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” explained DCI.
Moreover, the police stated that the priest had reportedly expressed concerns for his safety, although he had not filed any official complaint or report with the police.
Detectives have since recorded several witness statements and are working to retrace the priest’s final movements and forensic teams are analyzing evidence to piece together the events leading up to his abduction and death.
