A grisly accident involving trailers at a no-overtaking zone in the Salama area along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on May 20 disrupted traffic flow.
In a statement shared on Wednesday morning, the Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association said the accident involved two trailers.
“Terrible head-on collision involving two trailers between Sultan Hamud and Salama,” LoDCCA noted.
A video recorded from the scene showed the two trailers still stuck at the scene with broken windows, and members of the public gathered around.
A blue CMA CGM shipping container hauler collided with the white trailer, stopping both trailers on the lanes.
Following the collision, traffic was disrupted along this section of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Publics on the Fatal Collision
Washington Mbevi, a member of the public, suggested that major highways should always be dual carriageways to avoid such accidents.
Others, including Lucy Kasyoka, noted that previously a similar accident had occurred at the Salama area, where 3 vehicles were involved in the collision, leading to loss of life.
Drivers have been advised to respect the continuous yellow line and avoid overtaking in the no- overtaking zones to avoid accidents.

Sultan Hamud- Salama Fatal Accident Cases
In a separate case, a trailer was reported to have lost control near Salama Market on the Kiu Hill slope while heading to Mombasa. It collided with three other trucks heading in the opposite direction.
During the accident that occurred in mid-May, the trailer driver was feared dead, with the region experiencing major traffic disruptions.
In March, a similar fatal accident involving trucks colliding occurred near the Athi River area, with a fire breaking out, killing both the driver and conductor on the spot.
A 5km traffic jam was experienced in the section of the highway where the accident occurred due to the blockage and the fire.
At the Salama Downtown, the Mlima Kiu area, an accident involving a matatu and a lorry killed three people, with several injured, in late February.
According to the witnesses, the trailer was reported to have been driven recklessly, leading to the crash.
The police and emergency teams that reported to the scene took the victims for treatment at the Sultan Hamud Hospital.
