President William Ruto led the country in mourning the death of former member of parliament who served as minister and assistant minister, Nathan Munoko.
In a condolence message sent on Friday, December 20, Ruto mourned Munoko as one of the pioneer politicians who were dedicated to serving the people.
“Our country has lost a selfless and dedicated leader who served with distinction. Nathan Munoko — one of Kenya’s pioneer politicians who worked as a Minister, Assistant Minister and MP — was progressive, focused and a trendsetter,” Ruto said.
“May God grant the family, their loves ones and the people of Bungoma County strength at this dark moment. Rest In Peace.”
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka also sent his condolence message to Munoko’s family.
He said Munoko was a distinguished elder, a dedicated servant of the people, and a veteran politician whose wise counsel and unwavering dedication to service has left a lasting legacy.
“It is a sad day for Bungoma and our nation as we mourn the loss of a great man, Nathan Munoko. We remember him as a leader guided by humility, wisdom, and a deep sense of responsibility, a mentor, a father figure, and a symbol of resilience. His contributions to our community and nation will remain etched in our history,” Lusaka said.
Political Career
Munoko’s journey of service began as a teacher and administrator before transitioning into politics.
He stayed in the political field for over three decades serving in Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s government and during Daniel Arap Moi’s regime.
He represented Bungoma Central as Member of Parliament (MP) in the 1960s and rose to national prominence as Assistant Minister in various ministries.

Munoko served as Assistant Minister for Co-operatives and Marketing in 1964 and Assistant Minister for Housing and Social services in 1965.
He was moved to the Ministry of Local Government in 1966 before serving as Agriculture Assistant Minister in 1974.
From 1975 to 1979, he served as Minister of Works.
Beyond government, Mzee Munoko was a pillar of the KANU party, holding key positions that shaped the political landscape of our country.

He served as KANU’s national organizing secretary from 1966 to 1985 and the National Executive officer from 1985 to 1988.

Son Announces Death of Nathan Munoko
Munoko who was also a veterinary officer was born on May 20, 1922.
His death was announced by his son Tim Munoko on December 19, 2024.
