The inheritance row surrounding the late Mwai Kibaki, Kenya’s third president, has taken a new turn after another woman came forward claiming to be his daughter.
This latest revelation has added further complexity to the already contentious battle over Kibaki’s estate, which has been a subject of public and legal scrutiny.
The woman identified by the code name JNL told a court that the former President’s friends and his sons knew that he had a daughter outside marriage.
She further added that former cabinet ministers Kenneth Matiba, Dr. Julius Kiano, and former Commissioner of Income Tax G.K. Ihiga were aware of her birth and her relationship to the former President.
“I was informed by my contact, whose information I verily believe to be true that the men in the meeting (James, David and Anthony Kibaki), agreed to formally recognize me as their bloodline sibling, but the ladies in the group, led by my sister Judy, were very resistant and this may explain why James David and Anthony have not objected to my application dated October 14. 2022,” JNL said in a reply before court.

Woman Alleges to be the Daughter of the Late Mwai Kibaki
JNL claims that she was born 15 days before the late president married former First Lady Lucy Kibaki.
Additionally, JNL stated that she was born on December 1, 1961, and that the late president visited her at Aga Khan Hospital Nursery.

She further alleged that Judy Kibaki knew about her being a stepsister as they shared a close bond.
“I shared and told my sister Judy that I was born out of a relationship between my father Emilio Mwai Kibaki, seven years after my mother had been legally separated,” she said.
However, the former President’s children argued that there was no evidence from JNL’s mother about the alleged relationships with Kibaki or any of his friends who were named in the case.
The revelations come after a 63-year-old, claiming to be the late President Mwai Kibaki’s biological son, sued the family.
Ocholla Claimed to Be the First-Born Son of the Late President
Jacob Ocholla Mwai filed a case in 2022, requesting the court to compel the former president’s family to recognize him as the firstborn son and grant him an equal share of his extensive wealth.

Born in Kaloleni, Nairobi, in July 1960, Ocholla told the court that Hillary Ocholla, whom he knew as his father, died on January 28, 1981, and that is when his mother told him that he had been adopted.
On March 2024, Ocholla requested the court to order the exhumation of Kibaki’s body for the extraction and collection of samples to conduct a DNA paternity test.
However, the children opposed attempts to exhume the former President’s body, asserting that subjecting it to DNA testing would violate their privacy.
Kibaki had designated his four children, Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagai, and Anthony Githinji, as heirs to his estate.
