Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is a man under siege, barely two years since the Kenya Kwanza administration took over. And what appears to have complicated matters for the DP is a move by his boss President William Ruto to include the opposition in his so-called broad-based government. As the debate rages on, political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has cautioned Deputy President Gachagua to tread carefully amid reports of an impending impeachment.
In a statement posted on his X account on July 29, Ngunyi urged Gachagua to lay low, highlighting the significance of recent political developments.
Ngunyi pointed out that the Orange Democratic Movement party’s entry into the government, along with a potential handshake between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto, could have serious consequences for Gachagua.
He said that these events would likely lead to impeachment, framing it as a matter of when, not if.
Because of this, he advised Gachagua to adopt a low profile and avoid being conspicuous in his remarks and actions.
Mutahi Ngunyi Warns Gachagua Against Pushing Ruto too Far
“Dear Riggy G: Do you understand what ODM joining government means? And Uhuru-Ruto handshake, coming soon, would mean? It means impeachment. Not if, but when. If I were you, I would lie low like an envelope,” he said.
While acknowledging that President Ruto as a decent leader, Ngunyi warned Gachagua against pushing him too far.

“Ruto is a good man. However, do NOT push him,” warned Ngunyi.
Additionally, he pointed that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru Association (GEMA) had not fully embraced Gachagua.
He said that if this situation does not change within the next two years, it could indicate a lack of trust in Gachagua’s leadership capabilities.
“GEMA does not like you. If in two years, GEMA has not accepted Riggy G, something is wrong with this Son of the Soil.”
Ngunyi Asks Gachagua to Embrace Paranoia
Ngunyi also suggested that Gachagua should enjoy his tenure as Deputy President for the next decade but remain aware that those around him may not be allies.
He emphasized the importance of paranoia in a cutthroat political environment noting that only the paranoid survive.
“Riggy G should enjoy being DP for 10 years. He must know that everyone around him is an enemy. Only the Paranoid survive.”

Additionally, Ngunyi asked Gachagua to refrain from making public comments that could further complicate his position.
“Ask Mutahi Kahiga, your mouthpiece, to shut up. When not speaking, he speaks for you. You are not the only sons of Mau Mau.”
He urged Gachagua to engage in private negotiations with President Ruto, advocating for a discreet approach reminiscent of the Mau Mau, a group known for its secrecy and strategic thinking.
“Your Methods are those of a novice. Mau Mau was a secret organization that spoke very little. Negotiate with Ruto not in public, in private,” said Ngunyi.
