One of Kenya’s 47 counties has been shortlisted for the prestigious Innovative Management Award, in 2024.
The Innovative Management Award (IMA), by the African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM), seeks to promote and recognise innovations that improve performance in the public sector within the continent.
Among this year’s final shortlist for AAPAM-IMA is Murang’a County, which has been recognised for its two programs initiated to improve the residents’ living standards.
The programs initiated by the Murang’a county government which have been shortlisted include the Kang’ata Care and Murang’a Youth Service projects.
These initiatives have been recognized for their contribution to healthcare and youth empowerment.
Murang’a county provides free medical care to 20,000 vulnerable households through the Kang’ata Care project launched by Governor Irungu Kang’ata.
Murang’a County projects shortlisted
The initiative by Kang’ata’s administration has been recognized as the most innovative and life-changing project implemented by governments across the continent.
On the other hand, the second project is an initiative to empower young people across the county with short-term, two months of paid community service, after which they will be enrolled at Technical, Vocational Education and Training colleges (TVETs) for training.

MYS program provides employment opportunities to 1,050 youth after they are engaged by the government for two months in cleaning the towns and market centres, according to Youth CEC Noah Gachucha.
The IMA competition will be held during the 43rd Roundtable Conference in Kampala, Uganda from 26th 29th November 2024.
Murang’a County Health CEC Fredrick Mbugua said 16 government agencies on the continent will participate after they were nominated for the awards.
Mbugua said it is an honor for Murang’a county government to be recognized in the innovation category.

“For many families, it’s a safety net ensuring they receive comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care in both public and private facilities,” said Dr Mbugua.

Others in the shortlist are National Health Insurance Management Authority (Zambia), Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance, Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Registrar General’s Department (Mauritius), Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (Uganda) and Ghana’s Code Club Academy, among others.

The award program is designed to encourage creativity and innovation in public sector institutions, organizations and ministries at national and local levels.
It also seeks to facilitate the transfer of innovations and best practices, including digital transformation, as a way of improving the quality of public administration and management in Africa.
“The purpose of AAPAM-IMA is to contribute to the innovative development of public administration and management practices in Africa through the effective realization of the African aspirations for the ‘Africa We Want’ as set in the African Agenda 2063 and transform our world with goals determined in the Global Agenda 2030, ‘Transformation of Our World’,” the authority says.
Founded over 40 years ago, AAPAM has led efforts to strengthen the administrative and management capacities of African public administration systems.
