The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has issued a fresh update on the grounded cargo vessel M.V. DAN near Nyali Beach in Mombasa.
In a statement on July 23, KMA said it continues to work closely with relevant government agencies to monitor the situation, safeguard navigation, protect the marine environment and support the welfare of the crew on board.
“The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) confirms that M.V. DAN (IMO No. 8415160) remains grounded off Nyali Beach in Mombasa. KMA, in close collaboration with relevant Government agencies, continues to maintain continuous oversight of the situation to safeguard navigation, protect the marine environment and support the welfare of the crew on board,” stated KMA.
The authority added that the Kenya Coast Guard Service has maintained round-the-clock security and surveillance around the vessel to prevent unauthorized access and acts of vandalism.
KMA Confirms Mid-August 2026 Refloating Plan for Grounded M.V. DAN Vessel
According to KMA, a multi-agency team has held a series of consultative meetings with the vessel’s owners and their local representatives to coordinate the salvage operation.
The vessel owner has since appointed Yaa Holdings Limited as the salvage contractor.

KMA said the proposed salvage plan is currently undergoing the required regulatory and technical review, while mobilization of the specialized equipment needed for the operation is already underway.
The authority said the refloating operation is scheduled to commence in mid-August 2026, provided the regulatory approval process is completed, and all required salvage equipment arrives in Kenya on time.
KMA noted that the operation has been scheduled to coincide with favorable weather and tidal conditions to ensure the vessel is safely and efficiently refloated.
The authority also thanked the vessel owner, the appointed salvage contractor and all government agencies involved for their cooperation throughout the planning process.
KMA said it will continue providing regulatory oversight during the operation to ensure it complies with maritime safety and marine environmental protection requirements.
The authority further assured the public and maritime stakeholders that the situation remains under control and pledged to continue monitoring developments while providing regular updates on the progress of the salvage operation.
KMA’s Earlier Update on the Grounded Vessel
KMA had previously assured the public that efforts to refloat the grounded M.V. DAN were underway following a detailed inspection of the vessel.

In a statement issued on June 22, KMA said it had carried out an assessment of M.V. DAN (IMO No. 8415160) after the vessel ran aground near Nyali Beach.
The authority said it had been working closely with other government agencies to monitor the situation, with priority given to ensuring safe navigation, protecting the marine environment and safeguarding the welfare of the crew.
As part of the inspection, officials examined the vessel’s structural condition and evaluated the risk of environmental pollution.
According to KMA, the assessment found that the ship’s hull remained intact, with no signs of structural damage or oil leakage, indicating that the risk of marine pollution was low.
Despite the positive findings, the authority said precautionary measures would remain in place while the vessel continued to be closely monitored.
The monitoring operation has involved several agencies, including the Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Navy and Kenya Ports Authority. KMA noted that the Kenya Coast Guard Service had maintained 24-hour security and surveillance around the vessel to protect the crew, prevent unauthorized access and ensure a rapid response if needed.
The authority also said the vessel’s owner, SLA Maritime Co. S.A., had been fully cooperative and remained committed to safely refloating the ship.
At the time, KMA had indicated that the salvage operation was expected to begin around July 13, when favorable tidal conditions were anticipated.
