A Grade 6 pupil, Peace Nasimiyu at Prime Junior School in Ongata Rongai is recuperating after surviving a harrowing incident where she was shot while sitting in her classroom.
Peace Nasimiyu recounted the terrifying moment when a stray bullet struck her hand on September 17.
Nasimiyu was allegedly shot by a police officer a few meters away from Rongai Police Station.
“We were just sitting when we suddenly heard a gunshot, but we didn’t know where it came from,” she told Citizen TV.
Nasimiyu narrates her ordeal
“It hit my hand, passed through, and went on to pierce the desk I was sitting at, then fell to the ground, “the 13-year-old recounts.
Nasimiyu’s Mathematics teacher, who was in the classroom at the time of the incident, recalled hearing a loud bang, immediately followed by Nasimiyu’s cry of pain.
She added that the pupils were thrown into a state of panic, quickly rushing to the left side of the class in fear and confusion.
“When we had that sound of a blast, we all rushed towards the left side of the class and the girl’s right hand was on the top of the locker,” she said.

“So, when I checked her hand, I found out that there was wound on the top part of her hand then I turned it and found out that there was something that pierced her and came out of the hand and the child was screaming very much and the other kids were in panic.”
She went on stating, “I was also in panic mode, and I did know what to do.”

Her mother, Faith Mzinzi, lamented that her daughter will not be able to sit for the upcoming exams, as she writes with her right hand, which has been affected.
The shooting occurred on September 17, coinciding with protests at Multimedia University over various issues concerning the institution
IPOA launches investigations
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) launched investigations into the shooting incident.
Nasimiyu, who is scheduled to sit for her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) next month, is currently recovering in the hospital.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact origin of the bullet, which is believed to have been fired from a location about 20 meters away and ripped through the school’s iron sheet roof.
