The commander of the Kenyan police contingent deployed for the peacekeeping mission in Haiti, Godfrey Otunge, has emphasized that there is “no room for failure” in their efforts to combat the powerful gangs that have been wreaking havoc in the country.

In his first public address since the Kenyan force’s arrival in Haiti, Otunge underscored the critical nature of their mission, stating that success is paramount in the face of the challenges posed by the gangs.

He also noted that the United Nations-backed police mission was committed to ensuring security conditions conducive to holding free and fair democratic elections in the Caribbean nation.

Otunge’s remarks come at a time when Haiti is grappling with a severe security crisis, with powerful gangs controlling large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and engage in violent clashes with local law enforcement and rival factions

The Kenyan contingent, which is part of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), has been tasked with supporting the Haitian National Police in restoring order and stability in the country.

Commander Otunge on Fulfilling Mandate

Speaking during the press briefing, Otunge affirmed the Kenyan force’s determination to fulfill their mandate and bring peace to Haiti, despite the hard task ahead.

“We have a job that we are committed to do,” said Commander Godfrey Otunge.

Despite the obstacles, Otunge expressed optimism about the mission’s success, noting that by working closely with the Haitian National Police and other stakeholders, the Kenyan contingent can make a significant contribution to restoring peace and security in Haiti.

“We intend to achieve this by working closely with Haitian authorities and local and international partners dedicated to a new Haiti,” said Otunge.

Haiti Police Chief Remarks

During the press briefing on Monday July 8, Haitian police chief Normil Rameau also addressed the nation and revealed that the Kenyan police had retaken control of the country’s largest public hospital, which was taken over by gangs more than four months ago.

He also said that the operation took place on Sunday July 7 night, which saw the police take control of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti, also known as the General Hospital.

Additionally, the Haitian police chief also noted that the U.N-backed mission would focus on reclaiming all areas from gang control, reinstating police presence in regions lacking authority and assisting Haitians displaced by the gangs to return home.
