Jua Cali’s real name is Paul Julius Nunda, and he was born on September 12, 1979.

He is a legendary Kenyan hip-hop artist and record producer popularly known as the “King of Genge.” He is a pioneer of the Genge music genre, a style of Swahili- and Sheng-language rapping that reflects urban life in Nairobi.

Career Highlights and Background

  • Co-Founder of Calif Records

 In 2000, he co-founded the influential record label Calif Records alongside producer Clemo, which became a “hit factory” for Kenyan urban music, launching the careers of artists like Mejja and Nonini.

  • Musical Success

 His debut single, “Ruka,” was released in 2001, followed by major hits such as “Kwaheri” featuring Sanaipei Tande, “Kiasi,” “Bidii Yangu,” and “Ngeli ya Genge.”

  • Commercial Pioneer

 Jua Cali was the first Kenyan artist to land a major corporate endorsement deal, signing a million-shilling contract with Motorola in 2007, which opened more opportunities as he since served as an ambassador for brands like Orange (Telkom Kenya) in 2009, and Pamoja Mtaani.

  • Awards

 He has won numerous awards, including multiple Kisima Music Awards, where he was featured as the Best Male Artist, Boomba Male, and Chaguo La Teeniez Awards. 

Early Life and Educational Background

Jua Cali was born and raised in California Estate, Eastlands, Nairobi, on September 12, 1979.

His stage name, Jua Cali, is a play on the estate’s name, and some people take it to be the Swahili phrase Jua Kali, which means ‘know California,’ the estate he grew up in.

Jua Cali attended Jamuhuri High School and holds a diploma in Information Technology from the Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute (K.C.I.T.I).

He was recognized at the East Africa Entertainment Awards (EAEA) for his legendary 24-year contribution to the music scene.

Jua Cali was officially honored by the National Heroes Council ahead of Mashujaa Day for his role in shaping Kenya’s urban soundscape and cultural identity.

  • Kisima Music Awards- he won the Best Male Artist and Boomba Male in 2007.
  • Chaguo La Teeniez (CHAT) Awards, he got multiple wins, including Celebrity of the Year (2007) and Favorite Male Artist (2008).
  • In 2007, he received the Pearl of Africa Music Awards for Best Male Artist in Kenya.
  • He was named the ambassador for the “Make It Happen” campaign in 2013.
  • First Million-Shilling Deal- in 2007, he became the first Kenyan artist to sign a major corporate endorsement deal, a reported KSh 1 million annual contract with Motorola.
  • Orange Mobile Ambassador – in 2009, he signed a KSh 10 million one-year contract as the face of the “Hello Tunes” campaign for Orange.
  • He played a pivotal role in the Genge movement, which the Recording Academy officially recognized as a distinct subgenre for Grammy consideration starting in 2024.
  • Jua Cali was named one of the 100 Most Influential Kenyans by The Standard in 2007
  • He is the ambassador for the Bloodlink Foundation Kenya, supporting public health initiatives.
Family Background

He is married to Lilly Asigo, and they have 3 children together: Evans, their eldest son; Doreen, their second child; and Abby, their youngest daughter.

As of 2026, Jua Cali remains an active and respected figure in the East African music scene, having recently released singles such as “Naskia Raha” (2024) and continuing to champion Genge as a core element of Kenyan culture.
