The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is responsible for setting cluster and cut-off points for students joining various programs, ranging from certificate and diploma courses to degree programs.

Before a student chooses a course, one important aspect to consider is the subject cluster categories.

A subject cluster is a set of four Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) subjects that a candidate must have sat to be eligible for a given degree program.

For example, the subject clusters for health science courses include Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, and English or Kiswahili.

How KUCCPS Determines Placement and Cut-Off Points for College and University Admissions

All degree programs requiring the same set of four subjects are grouped into a cluster. (A list of degree program clusters can be found on the KUCCPS Students’ Portal at students.kuccps.net under Downloads.)

Another key element is the cluster weight, which ranks a student’s performance in a specific subject cluster against other candidates from that year’s KCSE.

It is the graduate’s computed performance in four subjects required for admission to a given degree programme against that of the best candidates in the particular KCSE examination year.

This weight is based on the cluster subject requirements and the overall performance of the candidate.

The points are computed to three decimal places to reduce the chances of applicants tying on points.

KUCCPS advises students not to attempt to calculate their own cluster points, as doing so may result in incorrect outcomes. Instead, students should check their official weighted cluster points, which are automatically computed and provided through their KUCCPS portal.

KUCCPS calculates the cluster points using its automated placement system, which relies on KCSE examination performance data, including the Performance Indices (PI) for each student, obtained from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).

It is important to note that individual secondary school graduates are not given access to their PI and, therefore, cannot calculate their weighted cluster points independently.

The seven best-performing subjects examined by KNEC are considered in the calculation of applicants’ weighted cluster points.

Cut-Off Points and How They Are Calculated

Cut-off points represent the cluster weight of the last applicant placed in a program based on merit.

These points are determined by the applicants’ performance for a degree course and the number of students a university can admit to that course.

During the placement process, applicants are arranged in descending order, from the highest to the lowest cluster weight.

The available slots are filled in this order until the last student is placed. The cluster weight of this last student becomes the cut-off point for that program.

It’s important to note that this process is automated, and KUCCPS cannot predetermine the cut-off points in advance.

“We consider merit as the most important aspect when we are placing students. We have developed a system within the institution, a computer system that once we get KNEC results, we rank all the students depending on the programmes they have selected,” KUCCPS CEO Alice Wahome said at a past event.

“Once the learners have been ranked, the last student who is ranked in that programme forms what people know as the cut-off point.”

Minimum Admission Requirements for Various Levels

The eligibility requirements for each education level are as follows:

For Artisan (Level 4) programs, students must have a KCSE mean grade of E, while for Craft (Level 5) programs, applicants will require a KCSE mean grade of D and above.

Further, admission to Diploma (Level 6) programs is open to students with a KCSE mean grade of C– and above.

All degree programs require a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ and above.

However, some courses may have additional subject-specific requirements, which will be detailed on the KUCCPS portal when the application period begins.

For degree placements, students’ weighted cluster points and cut-off scores will also be provided to guide their course selection.
