The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has revealed how Kenyans can travel from Nairobi County to Naivasha and back spending only Ksh400.
KPLC said this is possible if one uses an electric car and load electricity tokens worth Ksh400 which can go for up to 240 kilometers.
Kenya Power explained that the electric cars allow Kenyans to be free and the Ksh400 can cover a distance from Nairobi to Naivasha.
“With four hundred shillings worth of electricity tokens (400/=), you get to charge your electric car to full capacity in under an hour, giving you the freedom to travel up to 240kms. This is like travelling from Nairobi to Naivasha and back,” KPLC said.
KPLC stated that the highly discounted e-mobility tariff is designed to promote the adoption of e-mobility in the country.
KPLC Announce Plans to Promote E-Mobility
This comes months after the Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO Joseph Siror announced plans to allocate Ksh258 million towards advancing e-mobility in the country.
In a statement on April 22, KPLC said it will promote the adoption of Electric vehicles (Evs) in the country by acquiring more vehicles and motorbikes for company use.
“The investment includes the cost of setting up charging stations at various locations across the country and the purchase of electric vehicles and motorbikes to aid company operations,” read the statement in part.

Charging Stations
The company revealed their three-year plan to adopt electric vehicles and launched a Ksh6.5 million charging station at Stima Plaza.
Moreover, the charging station comprises two chargers: a 50 kW DC (1 hour charging time) and a 22 kW AC (2 hour charging time) charger.
KPLC also announced plans to install nine additional charging stations by July 2024 at various company offices nationwide after the Stima Plaza.
This was to be at Donholm, Nakuru, Mombasa, Mtito Andei, Kisumu, Eldoret, Roysambu, Electricity house Nairobi and Ragati.

Electric Vehicles
KPLC also unveiled two electric heavy-duty vehicles for operational use, acquired at a cost of Ksh18 million.
Siror explained how KPLC plans to use the data collected from the vehicles to support e-mobility reiterating that electric vehicles are the future of the transport system.
“The future of transport in electric and as a Company, we are very excited to be leading the conversations around E-mobility. Alongside our need to charge our electric vehicles, we intend to use our EV charging stations to collect data that will inform the next steps of our support to the growing E-mobility industry,” said Siror.
He said the Company has allocated Ksh20 million to add 10 more charging stations each year in 2025 and 2026.
