The Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK) is a registered political party under the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) led by former Attorney General Justin Muturi.
It was formed on 25 December 1991by former president Mwai Kibaki.
The Democratic Party of Kenya allows eligible Kenyans to join the party and actively participate in its political activities.
To qualify for membership in the Democratic Party of Kenya, an individual must:
- Be a Kenyan citizen
- Have attained the age of 18 years and above
- Possess a valid Kenyan National Identification Card or Passport
- Not be an active member of another political party at the time of registration
- Be willing to adhere to the Democratic Party of Kenya’s Constitution, policies, programs, directives, and discipline
The National Executive Committee (NEC) reserves the right to refuse membership to any person convicted of offences related to corruption, theft, dishonesty, drug trafficking, or other economic crimes, or whose conduct is deemed unworthy of party membership.
Democratic Party of Kenya Membership Registration Process
Membership registration with the DPK can be done through several approved channels, in line with Kenyan law and the Political Parties Act.

Registration via ORPP USSD System
All political party memberships in Kenya are officially managed and validated through the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
To join the Democratic Party of Kenya through the ORPP USSD system:
- Dial *509# on your mobile phone
- Select Review and follow the prompts to enter your personal details
- Receive an ORPP PIN via SMS
- Dial *509# again and enter your PIN
- Select Membership, then Join Another Party
- Choose your County, Constituency, and Ward using the provided codes
- Enter the Party Name: Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK)
- Confirm the party details and complete the registration process
Once approved, the Democratic Party of Kenya becomes your official political party of membership.
Physical Registration Through Party Offices
Interested Kenyans may also register verbally or in writing through:
- Authorized Democratic Party of Kenya officials or agents
- Party headquarters
- County party offices
- Official party mobilization drives
Upon enrolment, members are issued a Democratic Party of Kenya membership card.
Charges and Membership Costs
- Members are required to pay an admission fee, as determined by the Party from time to time
- Members must also pay an annual county subscription, as set by the National Executive Committee (NEC)
Joining the party via the ORPP USSD system does not attract a registration fee, apart from minimal airtime costs.
How to Deregister from the Democratic Party of Kenya
Members wishing to leave the Democratic Party of Kenya must deregister before joining another political party.
Deregistration can be done by:
- Dialling *509#, selecting Membership, then Resign from a Party, and following the prompts
- Writing formally to the party’s official offices, requesting removal from the membership register

How to Contest on a Democratic Party of Kenya Ticket
The Democratic Party of Kenya allows registered members to contest for elective positions under its party ticket, subject to:
- The DPK Constitution and nomination rules
- The Political Parties Act
- Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) regulations
Eligibility to Vie
To qualify as a DPK aspirant, one must:
- Be a registered Democratic Party of Kenya member in good standing
- Have been a party member for the required minimum period
- Be a registered voter in the relevant electoral area
- Meet all constitutional and IEBC requirements
- Not be a member of another political party at the time of nomination
- Agree to abide by the party’s Code of Conduct and dispute resolution mechanisms
Democratic Party of Kenya Nomination Charges
The Democratic Party of Kenya sets its non-refundable nomination fees.
The party’s nomination fees include:
- Presidential Aspirant: Ksh 1,000,000
- Governor Aspirant: Ksh 250,000
- Senator Aspirant: Ksh 200,000
- Member of Parliament Aspirant: Ksh 100,000
- County Women Representative: Ksh 100,000
- Member of County Assembly (MCA): Ksh 20,000
An additional application fee of KSh 1,000 applies to all aspirants.
Inclusivity Policy
The Democratic Party of Kenya grants a 50% discount on nomination fees to:
- Women
- Youth (35 years and below)
- Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs)
The party also notes that the discount does not apply to the County Women Representative position, which is already subsidized.
