Mohali police on Thursday, July 31, arrested a 48-year-old man wanted for multiple immigration fraud cases at an International Airport.
Vikramjit Singh, a resident of Jalandhar, Punjab, was intercepted moments before boarding a flight from Mumbai to Kenya using a forged passport.
The arrest followed a tip-off received by officers from Lehli police station. Acting swiftly, the team detained Singh at the airport and discovered he was using forged documents to travel abroad.
“He was using a fake identity to escape the country,” said Sub-Inspector Amandeep Singh, the SHO of Lehli police station.
“The passport was made using forged documents, which raises serious concerns over identity theft and misuse of official papers,” he added.
Family accused of other fraud cases
Singh and his wife, Karamjit Kaur, are accused of defrauding several individuals across four districts in Punjab.
They reportedly took millions of rupees from unsuspecting victims under the pretense of helping them travel abroad, mainly to Canada.
“The couple is accused of duping several individuals of millions of rupees under the false promise of sending them abroad, mainly to countries like Canada,” the reports indicated.

According to a report by The Times of India, one of the major cases was reported in 2023 by a former soldier, Nirmail Singh, who alleged that the couple took Rs 25 lakh to send his son to Canada but failed to deliver.
“They took our hard-earned money and gave us nothing in return. We trusted them, and they betrayed that trust,” Nirmail Singh told The Times of India.
Vikramjit family in Kenya
Police said the couple often changed their location to avoid arrest each time a new case was filed. While Vikramjit Singh was caught at the airport, his wife Karamjit Kaur and their son had already travelled to Kenya.
Following his arrest, Singh was presented before the Derabassi court, which granted four days of police custody for further interrogation and investigation.
Police are now working with international agencies to trace and repatriate Karamjit Kaur and her son. Officials said efforts are ongoing to ensure all individuals involved are brought to justice.
